Whining noise from engine

922 Views 44 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Paulcbr
Hi to everyone, am a newbie, I own a 98 bird with 38000 miles on the clock , over the winter I replaced chain and sprockets and new wheel bearings d.i.d chain JT sprockets, and Toyo wheel bearings have done about 150 miles since work and everything was fine but today I noticed a whining noise from engine which appears in each gear when underload if I dethrottle or pull the clutch in the noise goes , it sounds a bit like a race box running straight cut gears. Everything works as it should and gear change is smooth. I would appreciate any help or any ideas before I go balls deep and strip the engine down , the chain is not overtight and I have no play in bearings and bike handles really well I also get vibration through the bars but not excessive
Regards Paul

Thanks bikerian , I will set my free play to 45mm I am going to use the tru tension device and a laser to ensure everything is in line and correct play, what I did notice today is even though my chain at present is quite slack I only need to move it about 30 mm before the top run starts to lift
yep, its realy easy to set it to tight with out realising, and 30mm and the top run starts to lift is to tight considering you have an extended rear shock length, I think thats been your problem.
I hope so , will set everything later today and test ride then report back ,

i must admit, i probably check my chain every few weeks or so thinking its to slack, but as soon as i get on the floor with my tape measure its hardly moved at all, definatley not enough to bother adjusting it.
It’s a must I check my chain every end of the week before I go for the weekend ride
Ok so removed rear wheel checked all bearings and replaced the sprocket hub carrier bearing , rebuilt back up greased spindle set chain to 40mm play and aligned chain with laser light took it for a spin and tried several different things at low speed 15mph and under no noise , then tried 1st 2nd 3rd gears Upto 45 mph slight noise but noise is definitely louder in 4th 5th and 6th gear Upto say 65 mph then wind noise drowns it out it does not get any louder as such and definitely sounds louder on left side of engine , so I am thinking I have a noisy bearing on one of the gear shafts which is loaded more when the higher gears are used if I back off the throttle or dip the clutch the noise instantly stops which is weird as a gearbox shaft bearing is still taking load when throttle is backed off 😔😔😔
But not at the same level of load.
is it any quieter than before? or the same, you could try 45mm free play and if it was still doin it then hmmmm could be bearing on one of the shafts, bugger.

just out of interest, how long have you owned the bike for?, how many miles have you yourself put on it?.
has it had the longer extended rear shock on it for a long time?
Ok bikerian bought the bike last August , only rid about 50 miles mainly due to the guy before me being very short and had dropped the front and rear end quite alot and it handled like it only wanted to go in a straight line , so over the winter I did the following list, 1 removed old shock and replaced with yss shock adjusted shock 12 mm longer than stock ,2 raised front end back to std , 3 added bar risers, 4 fitted jaws delinking brake kit, 5 fitted hel oil cooler lines, 6 fitted a fan overide switch, 7 new wheel bearings front and rear, 8 new brake pads front and rear, 9 wheels and engine side casings powder coated, 10 new chain and sprockets, 11 new oil + filter, since build have done about 300 miles and it started making a noise about 45 miles ago it does appear to be about the same noise as before but is quite breezy over here at moment so hard to tell not sure whether to just keep riding it and see what happens or buy a second hand engine which would be a cheaper way to do it as a 30.000 mile engine for a carb bird is about £400 then I could strip original engine and get to bottom of issue, I cannot think what else it could be only other thing I have removed previously was the stator when I had casing powder coated , any ideas please , birds are not known for gearbox probs

When reassembling the stator, did you use blue lock tight on the screws?

FYI: check the 2 triangle plates under the shock. The arrows should point forward for stock ride height. The PO may have rotated them to lower it.

Is the swing arm pivot point ok. Potentially moving under load?

What would it take to put her on a rolling road? Best way to pinpoint the sound methinks.
Ok fizzy first of all no I did not use loctite on threads , and secondly the arrows on the plate face forwards but from the top or bottom of the triangle do you have a pic of how they go I removed his plates as they were different to stock, no rolling road near me nearest is 80 miles away
Swingarm is ok bike handles a treat cannot get any play in swingarm with a lever bar , I do appreciate all the help and I will remove stator and check
Unlikely it is the stator as it would make noise on and off the throttle. You never know I guess. Pulling it may mean a new gasket. (Semi permanent locktite)

Top of the triangle visible on LHS of bike says FR "arrow" facing front. When viewed from RHS these marking are not visible on the second plate because they are on the inside.

Cheers fizzy , all makes sense now will do plates tomorrow and check stator
thanks for the info

thanks for the info, looks like its been a labour of love with all the attention your bikes had, and you clearly know what your doing.
I did similar to what you did, apart from powder coat, but did a few more things as i couldnt stop when i started lol, eg, complete new clutch basket clutch and the list goes on.

if it was me, i would do like i think your going to do, buy anouther motor put it in, and strip the old one down.
I just cant think of any thing else really apart from engine strip, and inspect.
if some one else has a 12mm over length shock it would be interesting what chain slack they use, and to be honest, if you did 300 miles, if it was the chain it would have been doing it after the first few miles.
ive got that awful feeling its a gear box shaft bearing, and it could explain the slight different noise in high gears, as they spin at different rates hmmmmm, dam engines lol.

Hi Bikerian well today I took the bird out and done about 100 miles the noise is still there but appears less than before , the bike ran fine and I cruised between 70 to 80 mph on b roads , I am going to set the rear shock back to standard tomorrow and readjust chain , I really appreciate everyone's input as I am no spring chicken, and I believe when you try to hard to solve a issue you overthink the fault , I have also noticed that going over bumpy surfaces makes the noise cut in and out and also the noise seems to sometimes start straight away and other times it takes longer to start after accelerating from a standstill ,

Check the front sprocket. Make sure the splines are packed with moly grease.

Hmmm if it seems to not make as much wine now, and you put it changes noise going over bumps, which would mean your swingarm is moving up and down, changing chain tension as it goes through its motions then hmmm, at least it wont cost you any thing, changing shock length first back to oem, I'd do that, you never know, fingers crossed.

yer, mine was ok wasnt to loud when it was cold, but as it usualy is with me, i couldnt let it go lol.
I use fowlers parts, and david silvers, the prices can slightly be different between the 2 shops, I know its the mark up and all that, when i ran my bike shop, from memory it was anything under £100 you would double it and add VAT, any thing over £100 it was add half, and add VAT we all had the same ish prices in my region so we didnt under cut each other.
Oils and some other stuff was different though with pricing, as we all had the same supplier which set the price.

one other place i found was called consolidated motorcycle spares, in the Netherlands which can be alot cheaper on some parts than here in the uk.
i havent had any problems and ive probably spent about £1000-£1500 or even £2000 lol with them, and they have sorted the brexit tax bolloxs out as well, so no fedex bills asking for the VAT and there processing fee, gits.

Thanks for the info it is much appreciated , I use to buy stuff from Dave silvers in the 90s to rebuild my CB 750 fours sohc , plus they are only about 20 miles from me in Leiston , I do really appreciate all the help you and the others have given , it is very reassuring to join a forum and get good honest suggestions ,
