I have a pristine '03 with only 8000 miles, but that's about to quadruple in the next few years. I bought an AS3 set of hoses and all ready to go, but now seeing it looks like a serious pain in the ass and the stock ones seem fine. I like the piece of mind from doing preventative maintenance but don't want to go overboard.

If I do need to do it, any tips? First thing that comes to mind is cleaning above the water pump really well so dirt and sand doesn't get in.

Thank you in advance

I have an 01 with 25,000 and my hoses seem fine. Change your coolant of it is over 5 yrs. Honda says every 2 but at 4 yrs mine was still pristine.

It isn't a difficult job to do if you take the tank and fairing lowers off, only one of the hoses to the water pump requires a bit of fiddling.

Only you can really tell if the job is worth doing now since the condition of the existing hoses depend on the past life of the hoses, environmental conditions, fluid contained etc etc.
I have no doubt that there are a lot of '03's that haven't had their hoses changed and you don't often read of hose leaks.

I too like preventative maintenance and if I had a set of spare hoses I would fit them, why have them sitting in the garage deteriorating when you could have peace of mind?

This is what concerned me, I can't figure out why he had such a hard time

Simple answer, 'don't know'. When I replaced the hoses on my Bird I didn't encounter any of those issues apart from the fore mentioned water pump. I did take the tank off which makes access easier so does dropping the rad. I replaced my hoses with a silicone set which may be easier to push on (?)
Another tip, it is little effort to pull the water pump, pull it, put hoses and clips on and then replace the pump, then tighten up the clips, makes life easier.

My 98 has over 160 000km's and AFAIK hasn't had the hoses changed as I bought it with 32k on the clock in 06 and I haven't changed them and the original owner gave me most of the receipts for stuff he'd replaced which wasn't much ;) Still works fine even in hot weather :)

Ditto for me..... my 05BB has 130,000kms (errr 70k miles ? & 14yrs) with oem hoses...... I change my coolant every 4yrs though. One thing I'd check is the water pump. If it leaves any drops of coloured coolant on the floor/piece of paper etc overnight it may need replacing. A new radiator cap is a good investment too.... it doesn't have to be the Honda cap - my Honda shop parts guy sold me a generic cap a coupe of years ago (it was all they stocked).

When I changed brands of coolant, I ran distilled water through the system (running the engine) several times to flush all traces of the other brand out. I was using a good brand of long-life coolant, but now I just use the 50/50 premix sold by Honda shops.:thumb:
