I had never done upside-down forks before and they are definitely a different animal in many ways. I bought a fork kit from Traxxion Dynamics suspension for~$69 and finally bought some soft aluminum vise jaws from them. Both helped out immensely. I followed the shop manual and had the forks apart but getting that spring compressed was a problem. I had my son muscle it down holding the spring compressor handles but that wasn't a good solution. Finally after some YouTube video I used ratchet straps. Wonderful! Now to put the new upgraded internals in from Traxxion Dynamics... hey no instructions... that's weird as they are usually a really good company. After trying unsuccessfully to get the stuff figured out I sent an email... then looked under the bike and saw some papers under it... hmmmm... they were a set of very detailed instructions. Doh! I sent another email apologizing for being an idiot. Then back to getting it done. Forks all back together and it took a couple of evenings to learn... but now they are no problem. If you think you're going to do forks get a few tools meant for the job. That fork kit will allow you to do all forks with the tools you need.
I put on a Fenda Extender on. I never drill and screw on my Extender. I use 3M Extreme double sided tape and never had one come off at any speed. Was it a complete cartridge kit or the valves.
Complete cartridge. Old and new side by side. Traxxion is black. New springs are shorter as they are linear instead of progressive therefore their own spacer. Reused the fork caps as they were adjustable prior.

Cool
I didn't realize you had USD'd your bird. I went with Leni's recommendation on mine and revolved my stock cartridges. Not for the faint of heart. The red loctite them in from the factory! Had to put a lot of heat into them to get them apart!

Why would they ever put red loctite on that! I have a very good Snap On 3/8 drive impact that spins them out quite well. But I've only seen blue not red.

I haven't done this to my Bird! I was going to buy an African Twin when I retired but a guy at work ambushed me with an offer I couldn't say no to for a 2017 Yamaha Super Tenere with Moose Racing top box, panniers, Yoshimura muffler, extra touring windshield, extra Corbin seat that he never used. Had 13,400 miles on it. All for about 3 to $4,000 under market cost. I took it for a ride and payed the man. Now I am outfitting it with stuff. I'll put a link to the thread about it on the Tenere Forum. Learning a lot about it. I have also learned that Honda Shop Manuals are better at explaining how to do things better than a Yamaha shop manual. I am getting it ready for a 5 day jaunt at the end of March. Trailering it out to West Virginia and traveling the gravel and dirt back roads. If I retire this year I will ride it to Alaska on back roads! View attachment 135371

Yeah my thinking as well. Overkill on thier part. Do to the nature of the components you can't use an impact. It's all thin wall aluminum tubing. Heats the only way along with a couple special holding blocks. The lathe saved my tail on that one. Bought a couple of 2 inch aluminum blocks and bored them out for a exact diameters fit. Then split them. Had to use them to clamp the tunes to get the inner cartridge out of the main body. Then I had to use a smaller one to hold the inner tube to remove the internal valve out off that rod.
Yeah saw the thread on your Tenere score. Be sure to take her out do some slow roll turns. She's going to be heavy up top. Make sure your geared up hitting dirt ain't as bad as tarmac but it still stings. And we don't bounce as good as we used to.
Trust me

I have my regular gear and pads but will start to accumulate adventure gear now too. Maybe some motocross protection because I don't bounce anymore... I just go splat!

I've been working on this Super Tenere almost every night. Got quite the list accomplished and a few more things to do before I trailer it out to WV. Yes, I said trailer... goes against my nature but I put 50/50 tires on it and 900 miles out and back plus three days to ride... that would wear them down a lot... plus it's March/April and anything could happen weather wise. I'm finding out that Yamaha shop manuals are much more vague than Honda's.

Things I still need to do:
  • replace clutch and brake fluid
  • install speed bleeders
  • install a plastic wire hook under edge of seat to hold pigtail for heated gear out of site and out of weather.
  • re-install lower AltRider crash bars and then install upper AltRider bars.
  • Install T-Rex racing belly pan
  • perform Throttle Body Synch
  • ABS on/off switch modification
The list is getting very short!

List of completed items:
  • Remove and install ECU- flashed
  • Puig headlight protector
  • LED headlights
  • Quad-lock wireless phone charger
  • battery lead extensions
  • New K&N air filter
  • Fork internals Upgrade with Traxxion Dynamics Springs and AK-20 dampers
  • changed rear drive oil
  • Fenda Extender installed
  • Torque all spokes to correct torque
  • Lube Shift Lever pivot bolt
  • Lube kickstand and centerstand
  • remove street tires and replace with MotoZ Tractionator Adventure
  • Install AltRider lower fork protectors
  • Change coolant
  • Replaced inferior stock drive shaft joint protector that WILL GRAB MY RIDING PANTS LEG with an AltRider protector that doesn't stick up... what was Yamaha thinking?
  • AltRider kickstand foot enlarger
  • handlebar pwr source

Finished the Tenere tonight and the Corbin seat that the PO didn't use is Cat Nap approved... she never did that with the stock seat! Hahaha. Oh, I do have some OEM heated grips and a water pump shield on the way to the house too.
Now Finish means... for this year

If I keep it and don't get an African Twin then next year it will get a new rear shock by Traxxion (Penske or Ohlins) and some big bright Aux lights.
I had to stop spending somewhere and the rear shock wasn't transferable to the AT like the fork internals are.!!
