Hi guys, I recently got a FI blackbird. The principal issue i have is that the engine is really buzzy and the vibes make it uncomfortable and turn my fingers numb.
I'm told it's a smooth as warm butter but mine isn't.
The back story is the bike has been reframed and I wonder if the PO put it back together wrong...
Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

while i'm no expert, 2 things come to mind.

it is possible to remove the balancers, any chance a previous owner did?

there is an adjustment to the balancers to compensate for chain wear. few of us, even with high mile blackbirds ever have.

Go to the reference section. Look in the manual there is an adjustment procedure there. Pretty simple to do then let us know how it turns out. If it's still buzzing then we'll put the collective to work.
Oh are the weighted inserts still in the handle bars. Look inside you should see a threaded plug. Theres about 4 inches of heavy metal behind that that increases the bars mass and helps reduce the buzzing as well.

Never had my engine out, the manual mentions distance collars on the engine hanger bolts.
Also a sequence for torquing up the hanger bolts. If the collars are missing or the tightening sequence has not been done
the engine may not be central in the frame, causing vibration.
The silencer rear mountings should have rubber grommets.

I dont think they have been removed, it still has that blackbird whine which makes me think they are still in there.
But they might be out of sync...

I will check the reference section. the bar vibration dampers are still fitted and i've fitted some heavier bar ends to them in a bid to stop my hands going numb!

Interesting to read as I've recently noticed high frequency vibrations through the foot pegs on my carbie, all I've done is removed/refitted the carbs (fuel leak fix) and replaced the front steel sprocket with a rubberised one.... so that really worked! I'm hopeful it needs just a carb' balance to rectify things, seems it doesn't take a lot to bugger up the smooth nature of the bike. If the carb's going out of synch proves not to be the issue I'll have a similar headache to solve.

Cheers all...... when I synch my 05FI throttle bodies (using a fluid manometer...... errr also called mercury columns....... not those inaccurate vacuum style 'gauges') the BB runs like a electric turbine....... so smooth.... :thumb:...... I've never bothered changing the standard handgrips.

A dry or worn chain/sprockets will add to vibes. I noticed when I replaced the drive sprocket (and the rear with a new chain) with a non rubberized plain metal one that it wasn't as nice as the oem Honda sprocket. Depending on age and condition... the shafts between the throttle bodies might have some wear and be leaking air, so this will make it more difficult to get a perfect synch...... and the vacuum take off points (tubes) for the fluid manometer must be sealed perfect to get a good reading (I use new 'o' rings each time and lots of grease to seal any air leaks).

Maybe the motor needs to be settled into the mounts...... I read somewhere (and my cousin, the bike mechanic, once showed me how critical it was to tension the swing arm pivot correctly so as not to damage the frame) that there is a procedure for installing the motor correctly.

I doubt steering head bearings would cause vibes... but it's worth checking everything ;).

If the thing has been put together as well as Honda did at production time, then it should be super smooth. Best wishes ;)
