What’s up fellow Birdmen? New/old member here; good to be back from 4 yr. hiatus. Owner of ‘00 Titanium BB with some issues I hope to resolve with the help of you all. Special acknowledgment to Beestoy for previous help. Regards from W.Pennsylvania, USA.
Thanks, Mike

Welcome back to the flock CB.
Thanks Beez,
Last time we talked (about 4 yrs. ago) I had an issue with headlights blowing out but not the fuse..after checking voltages and grounds couldn’t find nothing wrong. Mechanic at small shop the same. He said change the battery and that was it…no more headlamp problems! BUT, prior to that happening I charged the battery off the bike and like a stooge had leads crossed. Charger automatically lets you know this but I didn’t catch it and walked away so that’s was the problem. However, it seems that since that, the bike is running a little on the rich side. I think that when I installed the cross-charged battery it might have done something to the ECU/M. Everything else is ok, runs great except for the unburned fuel odor. No sooty exhaust. According to some shop mechanics they don’t know or haven’t heard about how to re-boot the ECU or if it’s possible. One tuning shop said he cannot access ECU without using a power commander or similar. I need less fuel, not more. Plus the PC isn’t available for the 2000 BB model. A company in Sweden makes ‘Booster Plug’ for it and mech said he can access ECU with it. Less than $200 but don’t know if that’s the way to go. Whats your take on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again, Bees

Your mechanic is partially right. You cannot access the ECU. Power commander does not "access" to ECU, merely tweaks the signal.
Stock, they do run rich.
!. Make sure air filter is clean
2. Make sure there are no restrictions in the exhaust.
3. I am assuming that the bike runs ok with no FI light.
4. Check for hidden FI codes. There is an unused 2 pin connector in the tail section. Can be jumped with a paperclip. See manual for details.
5. What is your running battery voltage?

It is possible that the FPR has a pinhole leak. This will make her run rich to say the least. Pull the vac line off the FPR. It must be DRY of fuel. What is your mpg?

IMO: "cross charged battery" will not damage the ECU, but you may have a charging problem.

Go through fizzys list of things first.
As for the bike is it stock. Have you changed pipes or air filter.
No one that we know of has cracked the ECU so far
There's a gent here working with a company out of Europe. But haven't heard anymore on his progress. If you want do a thread search it's fairly recent.
Unfortunately Dynojet stopped making the PC3 for our birds in 2013. They did make a 5 for a little bit but we can't run it with our ECU. You can get one to work but it's a bit of work to get it done. I've got a thread in here on it.
Let us know what you find

Hi Fizz,
new air filter, delkevic slips, no sensors in exhaust

New air filter, no lights/Fi codes, will check 2 pin connector, running voltage 12.3-12.5 at last check,
Delkevic slips (quiet), no exhaust sensors, mpg mid 30’s. Charging system doing its job. No other issues except gas gauge (analog) not reading…will pull and check. Be getting bike out of garage storage soon….Still wintry weather here..No looking to installing performance/high tech updates..not needed for me..Thanks for the tech-tips, greatly appreciated! Get back to yinz soon.

I advise investing in a new FPR, the bike is old enough that it may warrant replacement. They're not prohibitively expensive.

I also advise upgrading the regulator if you plan on keeping the bike. Better for the wiring, battery, and switches.

The ECM does not use rewritable chips. Period. To alter the output requires adjusting the input with a power commander or likewise.

Regards from northeastern PA.

Thanks iXX, appreciate the input. After 22 years I’m sure that will be a good investment!

I'm turning 59 in June. I kept my Corbin, Helibars, DanMoto carbon fiber slip on mufflers and quite a bit more added on. Sounds like you got a young unmolested bike. I started riding it at 50. I had to get off at least every hour. Now I can and do 700 to 800 mile days if I need to get somewhere. But I still like touring and getting off every hr as that let's me go exploring this and that! On my Goldwing I don't do that!

I’ll be 66 soon and butt gets sore after 2 hrs…stretching helps. How do you get to 7-800/mile days? The corbin that was on it was the worst seat I ever sat on so on went the original..much better. ‘79 CB 650 I had 40 years ago was the best of all of the bikes I had…ride all day. Bro had GL1000 in the’80’s. Like sitting in an easy chair..haha. Can’t wait to ride..snowing today.

I would second Russell Day Long saddles if you want to ride longer distances or more than two hours.
I hadn't planned on doing long days on it but it just happened as my body adapted I guess. Longest day was on a 21 day 7500 mile trip. San Francisco to Seattle in 15.5 hours. All hwy doing 85 to 90 mph. I think it was 853 miles.
Then went on a 9 day 4500 mile trip to see Beestoy and do the Devil's Hwy ride he orchestrates every year. Came home in two days from AZ and each day was 750 and 754 miles. I do move around, have a large tank bag filled with softer gear I can rest on but I have to get into riding condition... can't be the first ride of the season. I also wear LDComfort.com under gear. No seams where you sit. Helps with staying warm or cooler as needed. Made a big difference. I was surprised. Well worth the money. I wear their gear when doing yard work on humid days here in the Midwest.

Thanks for the input. I’m usually comfortable when riding just sometimes that sciatica creeps up (not always) but it can be very aggravating. A 10 min. break and stretch fixes it. (Same thing with riding my bicycle). The upholstery shops are local with good reputation/quality. Re-foaming/forming might cure my ails.I’ve read about the tail; sounds like a great ride/time. What time of year is the ride?
Thanks, XX

This isn't the Dragon's Tail. I never go near that unless early or late in the season or middle of the week or early/late in the day. There are so many roads just as good around there and south of there.
If you want to ride the Appalachian Mountain's from West Virginia down to Northern Georgia then get these maps. Perfectly pocket sized and all really good roads marked in red.

Or get the Freeman Map App for more general rides.

We rode the Devil's Hwy in Eastern Arizona. I think it's the 1st week in June. It is hwy 191 but it used to be US route 666. I don't think there will be one this year as Beestoy is recovering from getting in an accident on his Bird.
If you ever ride California, Washington or British Columbia then go to Destinationhighways.com those are wonderful!
