Hello,
I'm new to the bike (wanted one since they came out) and this forum. Any forum for that matter. This is my first one. Love the bike but is there anything I should watch out for or problems that need to be fixed. Any weaknesses. Plan on putting progressive springs in the fork this spring. It has a corbin seat, after market windshield, carbon fiber tank protector. Plan on using it to go up in the twisties in South West Wisconsin or head down to the smokies around TN, NC,SC
Thanks in advance for any info.

Pretty solid overall. Change all your fluids. Consider replacing the original brake lines w better. Good tires and after you address the front suspension look for a good aftermarket rear shock. R&R plus stator sometimes are issues. You have very low mileage should be good for a while. Ride it and enjoy it

Thanks,
Have a very good mechanic in a small town. He road races and is a crew chief for someone who flies him in for the weekend so he can still run his shop during the week. He will check it out. I planned on the fluids/K&N air filter/ tires. I run Dunlops on my wings- What is a good tire in your opinion? Any suggestions for a rear shock? I know a place for good high quality SS brake lines. Stator? My 84 wing had it's stator replaced twice under warrantee. I'll watch for this one. I'm new to sport bikes but have been riding up front since1984. Should I get a gell battery to prevent any problems ?

Welcome from the windy city. Hey we are neighbors. Looks like you found a nice low mileage XX. Lets see some pics. I used to own a goldwing too. I didn't really enjoy the goldwing although it is a great bike for long distance touring. The XX is a reliable bike. The CCT, Stator and R&R are things that some have run into problems with. My bike is mostly stock so you would need to get advice on Mods from others. The only things I have done to mine is to put on VFR bars and a peg lowering kit. Can't wait for spring to actually show up.

Welcome. At an average of 583.3 miles per year your Bird is seriously under ridden. I would follow what Cisco said and just ride it for awhile. Check the search for "best tires" to see what members ride on. Remember that a tire that suits the roads in GB or Europe might not be the tire that suits NA roads. The last two years have been PR3 and Br 023 with a pair of Continentals for later this year. Make generous use of the search button. For example oil threads, tire threads, comfort, suspension, etc. Your bike is not even broken in imo. in spite of it's years. Your neighbourhood isn't seriously hot so I doubt water wetter or the like is necessary. As stated, maybe fresh hydraulic fluid, coolant, oil and filter, air cleaner and tires would be in order. Find out if you're comfy or do you need risers or peg lowering. There are a few seat options, Sargent for example. I would install a rear hugger, front mud guard, and screens for your oil/air rads. Check out www.superblackbird.co.uk www.partzilla.com John's Bike Bits. These sites offer Bird parts and bling. However, all this been said, ride your Bird till you're used to the position, power, userability, braking and the like. These bike, with proper maintenance ride forever. There are some weaknesses in the electrical, easily sorted. Suspension won't last long or even measure up depending on your style. Sky's the limit with these bikes. You might have to get used the linked braking system, for example. This engine will take turbo charging and super charging. For example. Good Luck enjoy your new bike. Remember, you are preaching to the converted when talking about the BlackBird.

What should you know? It's not run in yet! 12K and the motor is just about loose, ride it.

The obvious issues have been covered (CCT and Charging circuit and general maintenance), personally I like to put a meter across the charging system on a regular basis, two minute check. Don't rush into changing the ergonomics, lots have found they fit the bike after a couple of months ...... having thought 'no way' initially.

One thing you need to know is this: change your fluids before they become like this:

I'm lucky. This is only the clutch master. The slave was just as dirty. Fixed it all myself. The brake master is fine. Can you imagine getting this shite in the linked brakes circuit? If you have no idea when the brake fluid was replaced last, DO IT now.

Cheers

I'll be bringing the bike home around May 1st. Starting to snow again today and expecting 2". I'll research the tires and fluids. The bars and peg lowering interest me as I'm 6' 3". I'll check out some of those websites too. Followed FMAO's fluid change out thread. I'll be sure to look into that. I'll put up some pics soon. it is red like CB's. I love his bags for capacity and a long haul.
Strek...I'm only 80 miles from Chicago.
Thanks.

Couldn't agree more, specially the oil, the lifeline of your engine...you don't know what's in there...

Watch out for cops

If you make it down to the smokies holler at me, maybe we can meet up. We might even coax Rollie out.

Well, it has been a year since I bought the BB. I put 2000 miles on it. (Mid June to Sept) When I drove in the drive that day I told the wife I might sell it if I can't take the riding position. A year later I decided I can handle it. I guess she thought I was going to sell it as she said when you sell that bike we could buy a nice dining room table...Huh??? I am not selling the BB it is to much fun. It has new oil in it and is waiting for spring...if it ever comes! (-6 F tonight) I was hoping to trailer it down south and ride in the Ozarks or GA but this cold has gone way down to Atlanta! Just bought a camper trailer for the 2012 wing (aspen Classic) so Just little improvements this year on the BB. Anybody use the Convertibars? does a PCIII help much if stock pipes are kept but a K&N air filter put on? It smells like it is running rich and the pipes look like it too. Plan on a peg lowering kit this year. Looking at the SW-Motech and GIVI setup! Added an Adaptiv Mount and an Escort Max. Bought a tank bag...I am not used to a bike that has no storage (my wing up bringing). Want to put mirror extenders on it too.
Have had to learn how to take care of a chain...looking into a Scott Oiler.
Put some Bridgestone tires on that a buddy had new in his garage. More of a sport profile but hey for $130 for the set I said ok. Just rolls me into the corner faster
- Commrad will probably come down to GA to have Traxxion Dynamics do some magic on the wing to make it corner better.
- Jet Fire, I was testing that 7000 K zone and got popped by a county deputy. If I would have only looked up and down the road a little more when I left the stop sign!!! Hence the Escort Max.
Love the knowledge and the wit on this site. Even yours CB...LOL

I have a PC3 on my stock Bird, made the power curve more linear, no 5 and 8k rpm spike. Worth the cost? prob not with a stock bike but I like mine.

The peg lowering kit, mine had those when I brought it home. I hated them. I know a lot of the guys say they are great and the PO of my bike was one of those people. Using them caused me sever shoulder and neck pain but I'm odd. I prefer the bike stock, maybe Gen Mar/ Jaws risers and proper riding position. I'm just more comfortable that way. Another thing I hated about the peg kit as that I had to turn my toe in, what felt like under the bike, to shift. Not to mention I like to corner, hard, you can kiss that goodbye with them. My buddy with a fully dressed HD could out corner me when I had them on.

Hi XXGUY
2000 miles wow what happened, did you go the long way
I wouldn't bother with a PC3 with stock pipes even with slipons
I have a set of [email protected] slipons which i like but prefer the stock cans with paper filter (OEM),seems to go better feels more compressed,Fn hammers
Had the baffles inside the cans towards the link pipe end knocked out,to let more air circulate,a little experiment which worked, not much louder but better than before(2000 model no restrictions)
good luck.

Uh Oh, I like to corner hard too. That is the whole reason I bought the bike. Plus I love the looks too.
