Insurance (UK) 2022

Hi all,

Looking to renew the bike insurance. After quick search, could not find any recent discussions about UK Motorbike Insurance, so here it goes.

Somehow, MCE quietly let my insurance expire. Not sure how but either I missed text messages or email but only realised when received one last email with the fact.

Searching in GoCompare and MoneySupermarket there are a few options but I am convinced that there were other options discussed here which are not visible in the market comparison websites.

Does anyone have good suggestions, please?

I've used Bikesure for years now but that is because most insurance companies melt down when you mention 'bored out and supercharged'. :D

Now here is one that might be worth a try, a fellow Bird owner got a very good quote from them and the Bird is now considered by some companies to be a 'classic'.

Thank you guys. The problem with motorbikes, is that most of the specialised insurance companies do not seem to appear on the comparison websites.
I used MCE for 2 years, and the price was below £120 (comprehensive, paid in full, with minimum voluntary of £100).
Now it seems that prices have gone up.
I have gone over to Bennetts for bike insurance. They are even easy to contact via the phone and don't require a day off work to call them!!

Avoid Devitt like the plaque, nothing but grief!
Bennetts for me, for both my road bikes.

I have been with mce in the past, bikesure on my previous 2 fire blades, I used to get a miltibike policy, fully comprehensive £260, excess £500.
When I got my bird in march last year, I moved both bike off one by one as I sold them to pay for my bird and the extras I fitted lol.
For the bird alone bike sure wanted £280, I think the excess was £350, then I phoned bemoto, got it for £240 fully comprehensive £0 voluntary excess, cant remember the compulsory but I think it was £250.
This year I did gocompair, the AA stated £195, so I got back in touch with bemoto on my renual, and they did it for £190 16 years protected no claims, fully comp. So for now am staying with bemoto.

Adrian Flux, Bikesure for me for about five years now. Standard 98 Bird, pillion and 3000 miles, £500.00 compulsory excess which seems standard these days and with my riding qualifications I pay around £100.00 a year. Costs more to tax the old girl.

After a few contacts with the suggested companies, the average is around £190, including "EU breakdown" and "UK from home" coverage and the lowest possible compulsory value (Biksure is provided by Aviva, £200 excess, and can drive other motorbikes).
RHS also contacted me but I am not sure what originated that call ( cheaper and just £50 excess but feels less appealing than Bikesure, not clear the breakdown coverage)

Prices are much higher than I had with MCE for the past year (128) and maybe that explains why they let it to expire.

Money Supermarket summary where most fail to offer breakdown cover.

Maybe the difference is that I asked for the lower excess possible, pillion, 5k miles and EU break down. I guess that is the 90 something pounds difference explained.
I also set the bird value on the 5k pounds. I know, but it is a classic.

make sure your read the small print on break down, with which ever company you go with, some wont pick up unless your over a few miles away from home, and other stupid small print stuff.
and one of the things bemoto seems to do better is i haveput my nitron rear shock and end cans, and flat bar conversion on the policy with no extra cost.
oh and pillion cover, i think that was £20, but the total was still£190,, £350 excess.
I also state 3999 miles a year, insurance companys love it when people round the miles up, so by staying 1 mile down from a rounded figure can help get it slighly cheaper.
ive got the usual eu cover, cover to ride other peoples bikes with there permision as well.

No matter how much we read, there will always be some small print that we either missed or misunterpreted. It is written in a way to create confusion and escape roots for the insurance. But it is always a good advice.

When I asked over the phone, both said that is breakdown from home door, and the driver/bike return to garage is to the residence area, not the "nearest point". Now, that is the verbal version, which I hope matches the written small print.

For now I am tempted to go with Bikesure. But taking my time to read as much as I can without falling asleep or feeling lost.

Bikesure standard breakdown cover is like many others - they take you to the nearest garage and it has a mileage limit for how far they will take you without further charges.
It cost me £38 extra to make the breakdown cover full European & UK get me home cover.

Thanks everyone.
With winter and traveling abroad, only today I sorted out the insurance topic.
Opted to go with Bikesure. Got it shy above 200 pounds but with all covers I could include and minimum excess possible (350).

Back on the roads soon to enjoy Spring
I renewed mine with Bikesure again. They reduced the xs to £350.00 and the premium was well under £100.00.
I'm lucky in that I dont need breakdown or legal as I have that covered for all our vehicles under a separate insurance.

That should explain the difference, because I also added EU cover. And probably excessive miles (wishful thinking)
There were cheaper options but in the end opted for the full options from Bikesure. Also because the reassurance given by friends about Bikesure.

In the end, even I have opted for Bikesure, it was not free from some upset.
Along their validation, they questioned some of the statements requesting further evidence, which I provided, but at a cost.
Unfortunately, the way the insurance industry is build in the UK, takes you money on any interaction you maintain with their customer support. It feels they sell a cheep insurance just to then "suck your pocket" in the validation process.
If the premium value does not lower on next renewal, I will be switching away from Bikesure.
If it makes you all feel better I have got a quote from bikesure for £280 for my CBR1000F FC with euro cover.for 6 weeks …. This because I am not a resident of the UK anymore and they load it because I am a risk because I dont know uk roads even though I lived there for 40 years….
I can insure my bird here in Aus for a year for
much less than that.
