I have LSL tour match clip-ons on my Blackbird, and I was thinking about swapping them to even a bit higher ones. I´ve also tried LSL Superbike bar, but for some reason I do prefer clip-ons, so I was thinking about Gilles Variobars. With 70mm rise I guess I need atleast new clutch and brake lines, but that´s no problem, they are old enough to need replacement anyway. Is there anything else about installing these I should be aware of? And also, with a quick Google search, I didn´t see them anywhere not being "out of stock" or "temporarily unwailable" in EU area. Anyone know a good place to order them from in EU?

I run vario bars on Daily Bird and the 70mm rise is about right for me. You will need to grind off a bit/all of the tang on the M/C to get the lines to run in a sensible manner.
I bought my bars from Ebay, they come up periodically. Don't forget to look under later VFR800s that ran the 43mm forks, both sets that I bought were listed for the VFR.

Ok, I thought so too, that 70mm would be just right. VFR800s sets is a good idea, that I didn´t thought of. I remember reading sometime, that you had Andreani forks too in your Blackbird, I was thinking of those too. I have Hyperpro front springs now, I was thinking of upgrading them to Andreani. Omniaracing.com has those for sale, there´s option for weight and use of bikes, Track/Street/Mix Street&Track/Tourism, but I don´t know what that actually changes. My use for bike is mostly on the street, though I might try it on trackday´s sometimes. I´ve thought since new, that those Hyperpro´s are a bit too soft, what option would you suggest I order those Andreanis with?

When I ordered my Andreani I used street and gave my all up mass. They have been perfect for my needs after a little playing with the 'standard' settings. Can't see that you would need more for an occasional track day, even when I have had to carry out an emergency stop I have been some distance from bottoming the fork out.

70mm Variobars... how much they actually rise the clip-ons over the LSL's I have now? Measured from top yoke, with LSL´s clip-on seems to be 60mm up from the top yoke. Do 70mm Variobars actually give a 10mm more for that? In that case, I might need Variobars with 100mm rise? Gel seat I have, is I think higher than normal, that with the rise from rear shock, makes stock clip-on´s feel really low.

I'm running 100mm on my Busa front now and they are about the same height as my stock front was with modified helibars. The Helis had an extra inch added in them by the previous owner.

on my 2 bb i have put on vfr bars from 2002 onwards
they fit perfectly and give a decent rise
and from time to time you can get them cheaply

That sounds like what I`m looking for, when comparing Helibars to LSL´s, based what I found on the web about them. LSL´s might be just right, with lower seat, and standard shock height. With those raised Helibars, what changes you need to bike, to make them work? I was anyway thinking of changing to extra length clutch and brake lines, anything else?

Vfr bars look good, as they look the same as stock ones. But for my purpose, I need more height than that. On a stock bike seat height and so, they might be the best option, but not with this problem here I´m trying to solve.

I ran a set of carby cables for the throttle when I was using the stock bar control. My cruise control kit uses a goldwing control which now puts the cables out of the bottom. I still run the carby cables with the Busa front clip. With the 100mm varios it's the same fit and clearance

I sat on a completely stock Blackbird a couple days ago, it´s years ago since I´ve tested any other Blackbird than what I drive, and the seat height on it felt really low compared to my bike, so this is why the really high clip-on´s. By the way, about that Busa front conversion, how would you compare that, to stock Blackbird front with Andreani´s? I was thinking of completely new front sometime also, but I might get a good deal on some lighter wheels, that had some Galfer style brake discs on them. I´m not sure which brand they were, but they are supposed to be ok discs, I pretty much trust this guy who made me a deal on them.

From a suspension point of view I would say the andreani's and my modified zx12R front end are very similar with the andreani's perhaps shading it.

The real advantage in a front end swap is the ability to vastly improve the brakes IF you are happy to get rid of the linked brake system. I fitted larger dia fully floating Brembo discs and Brembo monobloc calipers on my supercharged Bird. With Daily Bird, which is now a 'general run about / touring bike' I wanted to keep the LBS so the andreani's do the job well for me.

The thing to remember is that front end conversions are never as simple as they seem. Devil in the detail. For instance you need to change the rear master cylinder to get a decent back brake, you have to fiddle with the bars/reservoirs to ensure they clear the screen cut outs, lock stops and steering lock need some work if they are to work well. All front end conversions are different and you may need to modify head bearings / steering stem to get everything right. Oh and you do need to get the rear suspension sorted at the same time otherwise you will end up with a really unbalanced bike.

Any raised bar will make a big difference in the push back you get from the bars. It becomes a leverage aspect. The biggest advantage is the separate compression and rebound the later setups allow. There is also the increased rigidity and a weight savings in the un-sprung weight that makes a noticeable handling difference

I am getting rid of the linked brakes, not that I think it´s a bad system, actually for city driving I prefer it, but it is gonna go now. Jaws de-linking kit with braided lines I think will do ok for me. I´m not sure if there´s something else that can be done to improve braking, than de-link+new discs+pads? By the way, how much larger diameter those brembos are than stock discs? Just curious...

Changing the rear master cylinder really helps you get a decent rear brake. If you don't change it you end up with a wooden feel and a very poor rear brake.

By the way, how much larger diameter those brembos are than stock discs? Just curious...

What would be a good option to replace the rear brake cylinder with? There´s something wrong with the rear brake right now, not sure yet what, but I need to take a look at that anyway. That is by the way a really nice looking front end setup for a Blackbird.

If you de-link there are two rear masters that people seem to use.
12.7 mm diameter from an NSR125
14mm diameter from a CBR300

Personally I prefer the feel with the CBR300 one fitted.
