I'm continuing my search for a blackbird and continuing to gather knowledge about the bikes. I have recently learned that the pre 99 birds are carburated. To all of you experienced blackbird owners, are the FI birds better? Or, are the carbed bikes just as good? I bet there are guys that have owned both.

Thanks

No O2 sensor on mine. No cat either.

As far as I know the only North American birds with that stuff are the California spec ones. The rest are running open loop.

Yep I've never read/seen anything different. UK (as always) was a bit different, 99-2001 no CAT, O2 sensor etc etc change over at digi dash change over model ............ this issue is also probably tied in with the change of the temp sensor position i.e taking it off the rad. IMHO the easiest way to tell what is/should be there is to look for the larger dia exhaust (as it enters the cans) that tells you it has a CAT and O2 sensor.

FI All the way.

Dont need to get the carbies balanced. Less lag. easier to hop up, chip computer etc.

When I got my 03 bird I knew then I would never go back to carbied bike. I got bird instead of zzr1100 because of FI on bird and carbs on zzr.
I used to have z ZX-11  (wtf wuz i thinking?)... you have to touch the carbs and all that things you know.

FI!!!!!!!!! You forget `bout everything... Just pop in da bike and ride!!!!!! :smilebig:

It may be me but im sure my carbed bird feels a bit smoother round town than my mates Fi. i was a bit jelous of his newer one but we both have had problem free riding (apart from my compression tube coming loose) and the new dash is not that much better looking.

In fact, I tend to ride in a lower gear than my biking buddy even at the same speeds and get the same fuel consumption as a result!

sent from my hairy arse using TapTalk

Hear hear! The only one I know of that considered it was Motus, and they gave up on it to keep the final price down.

That said, I love the fact that I can turn the key and hit the starter without worrying about a choke, and things like humidty, barometric pressure and altitude changes are non-issues with FI.

never owned or rode a carb bird but I prefer carb bikes in general. takes longer to tune them for sure but after fooling with them for over 25 years I like them. I do like the start and go of fi but most of carb bikes end up all most as good after my red neck tuning. worst one takes 1/2 choke for 30 seconds before you can ride. my vf500 generally doesn't need any choke if its over 40F. of course we have no emissions testing here or they would all be so lean they would have to have choke at 90F.
