Hi all,
New (again) member with a problem, hoping forum members will help steer me in the right direction (or thread).
I own a 2002 Blackbird that, because of life circumstances (moving house amongst others) sat in my garage for over a year. When I attempted to start the bike, she sounded rough so I decided to put her on the trailer and take her to the local Honda motorcycle dealership for a service.
The shop has now called me back with the following news:
- The gas tank is rusted and will need to be fixed ($300/400, no guaranteed results) or replaced ($900)
- The fuel lines will have to be replaced.
- At that point, the mechanic will take a look at the engine and take it from there.
He estimates minimum $1500/2000 for parts plus the cost of service.
I am not sure what to do as I am not eager to spend that kind of cash on a 17 year old bike that might only be worth $4000.
My options at this time are as follows: Part out the bike (not ideal for me as I know nothing about this process), sell the bike as is (not sure to who?), pay to fix the bike.
I would love to hear other's thoughts about all this of course!
I'm not even sure what could replace my beloved Silver Bullet...although there is a 2018 Hayabusa for sale down the road for $11,000 :eyebrows:

Fix it yourself. If the tank ain't leaking don't sweat it for now. There is an in tank filter that protects the fuel rail and injectors. Bring it back home dump the old fuel and flush the rail. Change the plugs and you should be good to go. If you need anything else ping us here and we'll walk you through it. The above steps only require a pair of pliers to remove the rail return line. That drains the tank. 17mm pulls the main line from the rail. Then a 10mm let's you pull the entire pump and filter assembly so you can inspect it yourself.

Ohh and there's only 1 fuel line. He's fishing for money get it out of there fast.

I'm in Gulfport. Take the bike to French and Son's on Pass Rd. Get them to go over it. Trust me on this one.

Ya, definitely get another opinion.Whole diagnosis sounds very fishy. Sure, fuel went bad if you never used stabilizer but I'd be very surprised if it ruined the lines or that the tank could be that rusty.
And I work at a dealership.

I faced this exact problem

what you need is a tank and likely pump and filter all available on ebay for a fraction of what they are quoting, worst case you may have to spray the replacement tank

fuel lines etc should be fine, just flush out the fuel rail once you have new tank

no other solution for a rusty tank than replace it - been there done that

BB tanks are very simple because of the Fuel pump assembly. You can very easily use POR15 and seal it.

I explored that option and concluded replace the tank was the most reliable clean 100% solution - just my opinion


the rust on the metal inside the tank needs to be completely cleaned off to bare metal using acid before using any treatment like POR15

First of all, thanks so much for all the replies to the thread, I really appreciate the time that you have all taken, believe me!
Here's where I am at:
- Although I understand the "fix it yourself" answers (and they are absolutely correct) I have neither the knowledge or time to spend on this at this time (3 jobs, 2 kids, wife and dog :))
- I went today to Suzuki City (locals will understand this) and spoke to Mike Sr, the owner. I have known him for 15 years since my early days with my Suzuki Bandit 1200s and fully trust him in these kinds of matters. He (shockingly!) agreed that it was time to get the bike out of Hall's and get it to Mike Jr who has taken over what used to be Coast Cycle (Honda) over on Pass Road. He volunteered the use of a trailer at no cost. He also mentioned taking the tank to French and Sons (looking at you, Contevita) as he states that they do a bang up job.
- Here is my issue. I do not have the truck or know how to safely get this bike over to the new location on Pass Road (or to remove the tank if applicable to get it to French and Sons). I could really do with a hand on this one and am (of course) prepared to pay for this. Contevita, if you think you can help me out, this is the time.
Ultimately, I need to get the Blackbird back in business in order to either sell her as I have a feeling that due to her age more issues that I am unable to address will creep up, or hold onto to her at least until a suitable replacement comes up.

I'm betting that once you get the tank off and the system flushed your going to be worry free for a while. The Bird was a well built bike and very sturdy. I've got 192,000 miles on mine so far with original engine frame and valve shims since i bought it with 18,000 on it.

I have a truck with a hitch, borrow or rent a trailer and I'll bring my truck over. I got straps too. I'm mostly free on the weekends but need notice so I can plan out stuff properly.

I'll respond to your PM with more info.

The 'bird is built like a brick outhouse and 1 year standing is nothing. It is most likely just a minor issue. Move it home and get your friend to help. I bet you get it going for just about a set of plugs. Once it's back in form you won't get a more reliable bike anyplace!!

Update: Thanks to Contevita, the bike has been relocated to South Mississippi Power Sports yesterday. After speaking with the mechanic there, it looks like (at a manageable cost in the big scheme of things) the Blackbird will come back to life and stay with me!
Major thanks again to you, Contevita, looking forward to getting some rides in as soon as she is back in business!

good you are making progress - the same issue cost me about $150 to sort out and I live in a country that has never sold the Honda Blackbird, there are probably about 5 in the whole country if that, I guess I'm lucky in a sense and own a very exclusive bike here

A quick update: I now have the bike back. Tank cleaned, new tires, new fuel pump, new master brake cylinder, new pads and a few more that I cannot think of right now...probably due to PTSD after swiping the credit card!
I cannot thank Contevita enough for all the help in getting the bike to the shop. A shout out also to South Mississippi Powersports for putting up with my phone calls and doing such a great job on the bike!
Contevita, I will reach out to you via PM so we can get a ride together even though these mornings are colder than a mother in law's heart :)
