Another Newbie Blackbird Owner...well soon anyways

    Hello,
I expect to be getting my first Blackbird in about four hours or so....like a kid at Christmas time.....
Anyways have been thinking about getting a Blackbird for many years and even though I have a '97 Honda VFR750 along with an '85 Honda V65 Magna....I would look for a Blackbird every so often.....well I found one...a 2003.
In talking to the owner appears that the BB needs nothing but a rider...not usually the bike I am after as I so enjoy working on my bikes. When I bought the V65 Magna, I rode it home, parked in garage, and then it took me 7 months before it left the garage again as I cleaned and replaced parts.

So I will likely be asking a lot of newbie questions so bear with me; I will use the Search feature first though.

    Talk to you guys soon.

"Not so fast coach!"....sale/purchase has been put on hold as the owner/seller inadvertently gave the BB's title to the buyer of another of his bikes....and he has no contact info. So he is going to have to resolve the title issue first.
    Soooo close.......

Dean, to be frank, the blackbird might not be for you. They are so reliable and well-built that they rarely need maintenance. You might find yourself riding more often than fixing it.
Good luck in your hunt for another but bear this in mind.

Pugwash: you know...you have a point; wife brought this up as well. This 2003 was not running when the current owner purchased from original owner. He got it cheap and then spent a lot of time/$$$ getting it running and ready for the road....exactly the bike I usually go for.
Since I first posted, the owner has resolved the title issue, but is not available for a few days, gives me time to re-think this.
    Thanks for your comment.

UPDATE: I decided to pass on the bike, so no BB for me. Hopefully I am not kicking myself for too long in doing this.

I'm guessing you'll find this bike in the For Sale Forum.

The V65's, both Magna and Sabre, never had an oiling problem. I do not know the complete history of how this got started. The problem was that the early '83s had a camshaft manufacturing problem. The add-on oiling lines really do nothing except put excessive oil to the top of the engine.
Both of these models are nice rides, cheap to get, but yes the carbs will need to be pulled out and cleaned if the fuel is not drained from them and fuel sits in them for a year or longer....depends upon how the bike is left.
The BB I was looking at required the fuel rail and throttle bodies removed and all cleaned due to to dry-out fuel....so same problem with any engine that sits and the fuel allowed to dry out.

I may get that BB yet......

The oiling issue was only on the first year. The supply bolt coming off the case was the issue and fixed mid year. Dave Dodge sold and adapter plate that sets between the filter and block and redirects oil to the heads as another bullet proof fix.
Route 191 formerly Route 666 Some say that this section of the
road has 1100 curves in 95 miles.
