There is air in the system somewhere probably.
Have the brakes had any work on them in the recent past?
Have you had to top up the fluid at any time recently?
    How old is the fluid?
Full of Hot air? Intercool yourself............ you know it makes sense

this is only my 2nd season with this bike .Last winter i pulled the calipers off and gave them a good cleaning and checked the pads they looked good but the bike is probably running on the same fluid and has not needed a top up . Just seems odd firm than soft .thought maybe proportion valve?

Brake fluid should be changed out completely every couple years. Soooooo I'm betting

That's my line of thinking as well although I am adding in the possibility that there is a bubble of air / slug of black mess that sits in one of the nooks and crannies and then moves as the brakes are applied hard.

Either way a full fluid change and bleed would be top of my list.

Third Duck! BUT! If I may add, what condition are your cables? Overtime they will expand! Just my 2cents here but if topping up with clean dot4 and you still have the same problem, might be because of worn cables. As for myself, I plan on installing braided cables on the whole hydraulic system for next season.... Cost? $425.3 + $47 ship = $472.30 CAN or $358.49 US. Once done you'l NEVER have to worry about your hydraulic system again! JMHO
