    Blackbird stator & regulator problems

    Hi guys
    looking for some advice on this, I have a 2000 bird with 70,000 miles on the clock. All was well until a couple of years ago when battery stopped charging. Took it to local garage & they said that the stator had gone faulty. So I changed the stator & rectifier since then I have gone through three stators. Anyone had a similar problem, I have got my staters from electret world so no cheap imports. Can a faulty regulator kill a stator & vice verser. Put new stator in a couple of weeks ago & now not producing voltage on one of the phases as per one before. Any body put in different stator & rectify combo,s to cure this problem. Thanks for your help or advice in advance

    Just my humble opinion, grown from installing 'a few' stators in my time.
    With aftermarket stators, for any vehicle, you really have to inspect the new component for possible clearance and thermal expansion issues.
    The problem usually lies in that the fella/machine that wound the winding has no idea how it fits or is mounted in the machine.
    Example: On my blackbird, the aftermarket stator had a single strand of insulated wire that slightly crossed the area where the knurled bolt head was to be installed. Sure enough, as soon as the hardware made minuscule contact, the insulation was removed and I confirmed continuity to the bikes ground. I didn't even crank the bolt down and it fouled the whole component!
    Another way I have seen brand new components fail is when there isn't enough clearance behind the stator and the case. The winding /damage contact is made just as the mounting hardware reaches torque.

    I have had luck in the past gently rearranging winding with my fingers to create the required clearances. Ultimately this could cause issues internally, it is a risk. I have also added insulation, in the form of high temp hot glue, to try and prevent contact with the machine.
    Good luck. I recommend changing the reg/rec and stator in pairs. -BIG DAN

    Stator from Rick's Motorsports Electrics and RR from Roadster Cycle are a popular combo. That's what I went with 30,000 miles ago after the original stator quit. I opted for the SH775 series RR as well based on a lot of recommendations.
