    Hi everyone, carb model down

I came looking for help and it looks like this is the place to get it!

I have a 97 carb model which has been running rough for about 18 months.
e.g. last run of last year I was out- it ran fiine for around 60 miles, then down to 3 cylinders. Through the winter I keep the battery on an optimate and start it once in a while, but its been running on 2 or 3 cylinders.
On 2 cyls now, one & two. can't be the coils? swapped to check. Nope. swapped back. no more fuel in in-line filters, decide to connect teh tank back to front so I can trouble shoot. Guess what, now its cyls 3 & 4 running, not 1 & 2??? I've emptied that tank and dried it. I put a torch in there on a cord and all loooks spotless & clean. I figured the tap. The diaphragm appears to work ok and teh tap is spotless I decided to drill off the cover to see right inside the tap. still spotless. Not I need to tap it & screw back on. but still no evidence of why it swapped sides like that . Any more ideas please?

Pull the carbs, disassemble & clean. You never know, the smallest piece of "trash" can cause the biggest problems.

Re: Hi everyone, carb model down

A trick I've used many times is to pull the entire carb bank and flip it upside down and bang it pretty good (as if doing the heimlick for babies not sledge hammering concrete) Put ti back on and worked many times.

Otherwise carb rebuild is the way to go.

just cause I'm lazy.....you're sure you got spark and plugs are fine? We'll assume you got air. Have you synced the carbs before?

    See ya and good luck!

Yah, clean those carbs. When(if) you dissassemble, be sure not to swap parts, you can cause yourself grief as they've warn to match their mates. So do it one carb at a time. You are really interested in the jets and air path, so a decent cleaning of those would probably fix your problem. Let us know!

Oh, also make sure the diaphram (rubber part under the black lid) fits well and is flexible, not crispy without holes or tears. That'll cause problems too.

Re: Hi everyone, carb model down

I suggest same or similair, Make sure you have spark on all 4 cylinder's if you do,
Clean the carb's probable a good idea if you have the money while the carb's are out & apart to replace all 4 pilot jet circuit's & all 4 jet needle's I have heard of these part's wearing, & causing a very rich condition at idle posibly flooding the engine. Then change fuel filter to make sure you are flowing 100%.
If this dosent fix your problem it's probably electrical look at the CDI or Igniter. Just my .02c hope to help.

Re: Hi everyone, carb model down

well guys thanks for all the suggestions. Over the last year when this happened, I've taken the carbs of & cleaned out the jets etc a couple of times, once by the local garage. I looked at the diaphragms and they all looked okay to me. Now since the weekend, I took the fuel hoses off and they are perfect. The filters are new and perfect. I put funnels on each hose & filled them with new petrol. It ran on all four, long enough for the fans to come on. I'm thinking with a new tap I'll try it like that. also I wondered if the vacum hose isn't making a good seal, may be its not opening the tap enough. but that doesn't explain swapping running cylinders when I reversed the tank??? Keep 'em coming ! thanks
