Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

Ok, the wing is gone. I pulled off my caliper to lend him And I screwed mine up. Have an eBay buy on the way... I still don't know how I screwed it up. I was screwing it in by hand until halfway in. He left and I grabbed the daughter's Rebel and started changing the front brake fluid. I don't think that it ever had it done and it is an 85! Opened it up and the reservoir was 2/3 empty and nasty. Pulled the dry sliders out and cleaned and lubed them. Cleaned the pads off too. Put it all back on and took the bleeder out and Tefloned it and put it back in. No problems and no air.

Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

Beginning this week I have changed to straight 8 hr days. 7 to 3 weekends off. 36 yrs of rotating 12 hr shifts! Well I am waking up easier and I have been out in the garage for 4 out of 5 days. Lots to do but haven't been motivated to do it. This week I just go out there for an hr or two. Last night started cleaning up my grandmother's old oil lamp. Put together a caliper, brake and clutch MC, helped a person who needed it. I think I am going to like this new schedule!

    https://m.facebook.com/story.php?sto...00003704648576

Needed some brake fluid to put on the caliper pistons when reinstalling them. Opened up my old 84 Standard GW's clutch reservoir. Almost empty and nasty. Been sitting for two years. That's on the to do list to get going again this year. Also tearing down the flooded Bird. Decided to sell off parts if anyone wants something let me know. I will see if I have a good part.
Then the doorbell rang and I saw a big box and told #3 daughter to open it up. She took out some new pirelli tires for her Rebel and tubes and rubber rim strips. For me Dad???? Yep. Gee it's like Christmas came early!

Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

Having #3 daughter do winter maintenance on her Rebel. Clutch free play, throttle free play, foot brake free play, cleaned out the fuel petcock screen and bowl, took the seat off. It will be sent off and redone, removed front tire, fender, forks. I did some measuring on the carb and I took the forks apart. Nasty oil and I can't get the bottom bolt out that threads into the oil lock cap. Yes, I had my pneumatic impact. Will try my Dad's old electric impact tomorrow. The springs are 33 years old. Don't want stock but I think it's the only place to get springs for a 1985 Honda Rebel CMX250. Thought about putting 2 inch spacers in to compress that long progressive spring. Maybe one inch. Made from some PVC pipe if I can find some to fit. New seals and dust caps. I have to get the internals out to see if new bushings will be needed. New rear shocks off the internet for $53 USD as it has the original shocks still on. Can't get the cap off of the right fork. Axle cap. Two studs are kinda rusty and it made me cringe when I looked at the cap. Someone had taken a screwdriver to it before and pried that soft aluminum. Tire is 12 yrs old so the axle was dry but the bearings are good! I put the bottom of the forks into my Ultrasonic parts cleaner to see if that might loosen up the corrosion... we shall see. Tomorrow is another day. Daughters learning. Oh, Diana went to take off the speedometer cable... make sure you loosen it! She went righty tighty and crack! Yep busted the plastic. You guys think that I should try and JB Weld it? She said ... Dad that's my fault I will pay for that. Wow, that was nice to hear!

Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

Front end is back together with new bushings, seals and dust caps and oil. Since the front end was diving a lot hopefully new oil will change that. Used maximum cc's of oil that they allowed to lessen the air gap and stacked an inch of washers to pre-compress the progressive springs a bit. Just put on a new headlamp assembly that has a new modern H4 bulb in it compared to the original dim 1985 bulb. The oil lock bolt head stripped out on me.

Front tire and tube have been replaced and balanced. Now to turn it around tomorrow and change out the rear tire and change the oil20190320_195519.jpg. Give it a test run and then get the BB on the lift.

Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

Well this is just how working on a 34 yr old bike goes! Took it off the lift turned it around and then raised the lift. Modified a piece on my small bike Jack to fit this little bike. Took the tire off and hit a large snag. The inside of the rim was quite rusty! Got a small cold chisel and chipped off the layers of expanded rust. Got down to good steel... close?? Will go up tomorrow and buy a pint of POR-15 paint over rust. Paint the inside of the rim to stop the rust. Let it dry for a day then put the tire on and get everything done Saturday... maybe! So old tire is on the ground and the new tire is just wishing it was on the rim. This is why I don't mind working on my bikes. Many a shop would have slapped a new tire on and sent it out the door. Some wouldn't have but many would.
These tires were on it when I bought it for the #1 daughter 6 yrs ago. It's on #3 now.

Totally agree with doing your own maintenance ..... my bikes NEVER see a shop.

Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

So this is what that nasty rusty rim looks like after I wire brushed it for 15 minutes and then took around another 10 to 15 minutes to paint it with a throw a way brush and POR-15. This stuff works wonders. Sunlight kills it so it must be top coated with paint if going to be exposed to sun. They now sell it in smaller 4 oz cans. Cost me $10 USD. I maybe used a 3rd of it. I cleaned the seal and will store it upside down to try and save it for another use.
Short video of the results. Yes, I know I would have no fish eyes if I had wiped it down with a solvent! Rust is covered!!!!

Once it's opened it's done. It's air catalyzed so it'll be a brick in a week at the most. stuff works great though. Just did the tank on my camino with it.

I found that if I store it upside down it takes a long time to harden all the way. No air by opening of the can.

I once put saran wrap on the surface and then stored the can upright and it was good until I used it a year later. I had to break through a hardened layer though.

Putting the chain on the Rebel. You guys think that's straight enough? First try and I think it's good. Me still thinks it's still better to be lucky than good! I even put a round shafted screwdriver shaft between the chain and sprocket and rotated it to put torque on the adjusters to see if they would move. They didn't. I'll check it after she rides around 10 miles to be sure.

Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

Well, I am a forgetful idiot! Chain all adjusted and I am rinsing off the chain after cleaning it and... Hey, there are no weights on this rim! Oh No! So 70 minutes later the chain has been adjusted again and I am getting ready to lube it. I had the balancer out but I didn't think about it as it was behind me and I don't think I ever took any weights off of the wheel. I balance the whole turning assembly...cush drive, sprockets and all. Took almost 5 oz of lead but she is perfect now.

Re: What I have been doing the last few evenings!

The thing was running about the best it had been in the last 6 yrs when I was tweaking the carb last fall. Got everything put back together and it didn't even pop at all. Even using starter fluid. I pulled the plugs. They black and were wet. Dried them and wire brushed them. The wife is out there and sees the plugs. Why don't you rebuild that carb you've done just about everything else on this and it has always run rich. That should not be the problem though! So I ground the plugs on the engine and no spark. Well, I did have the tank off??? I will look into it tomorrow and order a carb rebuild kit and take this one apart and put it in my ultrasonic cleaner.
