    some advice may be useful...

    hi Guys again
i did report last week i had " picked up a bargain " non runner in germany last week for under 1000 eur with 14000 mi 20000 km full with clean oil and not run for ca 6 years ( kept dry garaged ) by a older fellow ( even older than me)
i have de- varnished the carbs and they work ( i used them on my other bb on a side by side test )
tank is not rotten thank the gods gas is rinsed out and renewed
i found that the petcock had frozen closed ( rotten seal ) but i have another and it works and is installed
oil light extinguishes right away on turning over

so im now getting to the point of wanting to do a trial start
    but
i took out all the plugs and turned over the engine using the starter
there was a light( not thumping ) metallic knocking noise coming from the starter area as it turns over
    there is a decent spark
i did a trial turning over with the plugs back in and its the same , perhaps a bit heavier
i was wondering what this might be and wondering if i need to do more investigation before i try to light her up and possibly b--er something important up

    questions
do these engines snap piston rings when they are left sitting for some time
do they snap cam chains ? interference engine...
do the starter clutches make a knocking noise if on the way out?
    or ?

if so then i may need to do a valve cover off and compression check to see if the internals a b---ered
    thanks for your input
    paul

Compression check should give you a heads up on a broken ring. Cam chains are pretty bullet proof. I don't think the bird is a zero clearance engine but again compression test will tell you.
The other possibility is the starter gear is knocked. You can pull the stator cover and see both it and the starter gear if you need to be sure.

    hi bees
    hanks for your reply
from other sources it concurrs with your idea of a duff tooth or sprag
ill try to light her up and see if the engine runs sweet
if so ill invest in the part replacement
    thanks for the heads up

    hi Guys
well i took the time to
    rinse the tank
    replace the duff petcock
    prime the carbs with fuel
fairing off to check the rad level
add coolant to the overflow tank
    choke full on
    started instantly
idle a little rough to be gin with but as warned up smoothed out
let he get hot and then drained the oil
put in a flushing oil with naptha and got here hot again
    refilled with decent oil
    so now thats done
ill write another post about the sticking lhs frt caliper
    cheers
    paul
