Short story, WTB SBBXX, Newest member intro

After being out of the 2 wheel game for just over a decade, the kids have grown and I’m nudging back into the sport! My steel horses of past are the Katana 600, VFR 750, Yamaha Royalstar and the R1. Did have the classic 1972 Honda Trail 70 and still hold the ‘69 mini z 50 in the stable...always fancied the XX; in my 20’s I nearly purchased one until I got the insurance shocker.

I thought I was out of the game for good, as I figured over the hill meant buy a corvette, take a seat and be safe in the roll cage....But stars align and things change. I unfortunately lost a friend to an untimely death a couple months ago and purchased his CBR 600 F3 from his estate. 23 years ago I used to ride my new VFR side by side to Matt’s new F3. Simpler times and a lot of testosterone flowing back then! So really, I made an emotional and nostalgic purchase.

Much to my surprise, when picking up the F3, I noticed the license plate had a tag from 1998. I asked when the last time was he had ridden it. I was told in 1998! I was then informed he had some possible shifting issues. This explains why he let the Smokin’ Joe copycat sit and buy other bikes...I hadn’t pieced that part of the puzzle until now. Oh boy, I get it home and it has been sitting in my garage with somewhat of buyer’s remorse. In addition to all the chores that life brings, I’m thinking I have carbs to rebuild and possibly have to split some cases. Not exactly what I signed up for. So in all my online searching and doing homework, I revisit the idea of the blackbird.

I am all about getting back in the saddle and twisting that hand grip. I want immediate gratification! So what’s the fate of the F3? I’m not sure at this point. Maybe this weekend I start working on the carbs, get a fresh battery, change fluids and see what happens. Maybe I take a hit and sell her as is. Super clean and 6,700 miles- time will tell the fate.

Reality as of late leads my search and heart for the SBBXX....I am in the metro Detroit area. I’m not afraid of maybe a 5 hour drive or so to pick up a well-maintained, black beauty. I would even consider buying one sight unseen and having it shipped if the price was right. If you think you could fit into this equation- please, reach out!

I look forward to being a member of this community. I will keep ya posted with the F3 challenge as well as the XX quest..Chat with y’all later! George

Hi George, good luck with the search. If you run into trouble with the F3 let me know, I had a modified F2/F3 for over 10 yrs, I know them inside and out and still have a few parts lying around but not much.I work at a Kawi dealership but one of my suppliers keeps posting a weekly sale list, and every week an F3 gasket set is on it, my cost is WAY below normal, safe to say you cold snag it for $120 CDN.

I hope they drained the fuel out of the carbs.
