    CBR1100XXV running problems

    Hi everyone, first post so be gentle 😉

    I’ve had my bird for many years, but she’s only done 500miles in the past 4 and spent the rest of the time in the garage.

    Got her MOT’d a few months back and she ran fine, started her up yesterday and was running very rough - required lots of attempts to find the sweet spot on the choke (about 1/3rd) but any throttle and would cut. After warming up she allowed the choke to be closed, and was sounding more normal but smelt rich.

    Took her for a spin and on the motorway lost all power at speed, when I clicked into neutral engine died. Pulled to the hard shoulder and she started up again sounding normal.

    I thought maybe the carbs have become blocked with standing, so have started the process of taking them off to clean them up although I can’t seem to separate them from the crankcase after slacking off the clamps? Any tips appreciated.

    I also thought I’d check the plugs and found the threads fouled with fuel... any ideas?

    Check the fuel petcock diaphragm see of the check port (the cast aluminum post/port bottom center) for signs of wetness. Also check oil for fuel smell. Chances are ports in the carbs are plugged so be very thorough in cleaning. As for getting carbs loose. Use a hair dryer and heat the boots up to make them more pliable.
    When you loosened the carb clamps were any loose already? They may have shrunk with time and gone loose.

    Thanks for that. Carbs are now in pieces ready to be cleaned - ended up using a large 32mm as a lever against the frame (with a protective rag underneath) to get the carbs off! Am going to take advantage of having everything in bits to fit a stage 1 dyno jet kit at the same time.

    Will keep you posted with progress.
