Moron (me) crossed jumper cables, pop! Smoke, no start

In my defense, I had a high fever and was trying to get to the doc. The battery had drained as I’d left the heated grips on.
I replaced the 30 amp main fuse, and all other fuses test ok. It turns over great. Fuel injection making usual restart sounds. Is it the R/r? I imagine that stands for replace rectifier? I don’t see anything melted, there’s gas in her, and all connections appear intact. Power commander runs its usual light show.
I have a multimeter and ain’t afraid to use it. I do much wrenching but haven’t had to do much electrical...

Has anyone done this, or know what’s most likely to get fried. This bike is my primary transportation, and I miss her dearly.
Any advise will get you great karma!
    Thank you!

Basics first. Pull a plug and verify you have spark. I suspect you have hurt the ECM. Once your sure there's no fire then we'll have to go from there. Hopefully it's just killed the pulse generator. There are testing procedures in the factory manual in the resources center. I'd go there next and see what it says. It'll give you troubleshooting tips and things to test as well.

Make sure the engine run circuit is in on position: engine stop/start switch on handlebars, engine in neutral, sidestand up, clutch in (for luck). Maybe clutch diode has blown? Also, check anti tip over switch. Does FI light come on with ignition, then go out after a few seconds? Dead battery?
Important, do not jump bike from running car. Car engine must be off. Too many amps.

Thanks a lot guys. I have the service manual on order. I just remembered there’s a cheesy aftermarket alarm installed, and I’ve read elsewhere that may be the culprit. Beats dealing with a pulse generator.
    Karmas on its way!!!

Did you happen to notice where the smoke came from?

That doesn't make any sense, the bike will only use what it needs no matter how much current is available, don't need the car engine running and should never be running but that's for entirely different reasons. Just saying lol

To the OP - was the bike running when you shorted out the jumper cables ? which end of jumpers did you short out ?

There is another main fuse on top of the starter solenoid that can cause weird stuff

I can't see how shorting a jumper cable will do any damage to anything apart from maybe the battery but that was flat so hard to say, and if the bike engine was running maybe some damage to RR but still very unlikely as it has a fuse, plus a busted RR should not stop it starting if you have a fully charged battery

Is the bike battery still flat ? - are you still trying to jump start it ?...………….if so, lift the earth from the bike battery and use the car battery to try start and run the bike.

TBH it sounds more like you connected the jumpers the wrong way round - that is the only way I can see any possible damage being done, so if you are sure that is not the case then something else is going on totally unrelated

Does the bike have HISS ?

But forgetting all that - my money is on the alarm/immobiliser doing something weird because you let the battery run down - not sure how they work in a bike

I think you are over thinking this - IMO the bike would not have started even if you hadn't done something naughty with the jumpers (unless you reversed them of course), if the FI light is going out then no problem with ECU - fuel pump running - again no problem, HISS ?...………………...Alarm !!!!!! - remove it

    I love a mystery

I did the same thing on my Honda 919, replaced the main fuse and still no start. Pulled the spark plugs and thought I had spark, but the spark plugs were arcing on the threads instead of the tip. Replaced the spark plugs and it fired right up.

It turns over, the fuel pump is working, Theoretically there is still oxygen in the air.

#1 - You can spray starting fluid into the air intake on the front of the bike. Give it a 3 second spray while cranking and holding the throttle open. If you are not getting fuel, the bike will stumble and try to start.

    If that doesn't work....

#2 - I don't care if your blinky lights work, take the Power Commander out of the system. They are great, but are usually a weak link in. Once that is out, try to start. If no start, repeat #1.

After that, I'd be suspicious for an ECU. If you've got a local fellow with an XX, ask him to try your ECU in his bike.
Worse case, send it to me, I'll test it in my bike. The idea is not to put a good ECU into a non-working bike. Its a very expensive diagnostic tool. Putting a bad ECU into a working bike won't harm anything.

In theory, if your electrical jolt fried the ECU, that no longer exists, and a replacement ECU would not be damaged by the bike. Best to eliminate variables first, though.

I totally agree with the quick spray of starting fluid....I have been doing that for 40 years when I am troubleshooting.

Geoff the factory R/R will not react fast enough with a car running and hooked up. It's pushing typically 60 amps on top of the usual 5 to 600 amps in the battery already. Sometimes the R/R can react fast enough sometimes not. I have seen gauge pods taken out on 3 separate bikes when the car was running.

The RR is regulating the AC Generator output to 13-14.5 volts, what comes from a car is already regulated - it's all about voltage - current is drawn not pushed - voltage is the pusher/puller but I see the point that the bike RR might try and regulate the output from the car as well, it's always best not to have the engine running regardless, car to car, car to bike, bike to bike.

When using a car battery what might get damaged is the bike battery if it is really flat...……………………….none of this has any relevance to the current OP issue - unless of course he reversed the polarity which I don't think he did

I thought he touched them together not reversed polarity...……...ooooops
