    Hit bump engine cut out.

    Morning Everyone.
Somthing strange happened this morning. I hit a lump in the road a bit harder than normal........for a couple of seconds the engine cut out. The FI light & the HISS light came on. But bike sort of jumped itself again....only lasted a couple of seconds.
When i slowed down i did restart the bike but it all seemes fine.

Im not sure if this is related to engine/electrics. So if its in the wrong section of the form then sorry.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be a cause?
I am guessing either the bump jiggled the HISS and set it off somhow or a it disrupted the fuel flow somhow????

    Thanks for any help guys

Is the ECU strapped down? I had something similar happen when one of the wires into the ECU broke, due to it moving around and the g-force of a tight bend

Another idea is maybe the tilt sensor tripped? I'd worry if it happens again but not after one time, especially with the big jolt involved

My first thought was ecy too. But could it be that the bump was enough to move the sidestand to make the bike think you were in gear with it down, and therefore cut it out?

Tilt sensor cuts bike in case of accidents, is under seat on r/h side, looks like a half circle. Is a basic pendulum affair with damping AFAIK. Ecu is a good call as well if not well tied down

Re: Hit bump engine cut out.

What you have reported is 'classic' ECM not strapped down properly. That would be my first port of call.
If the ECM isn't strapped down really well a decent bump can cause exactly what you have described.

Very unlikely to be a HISS issue, and whilst the tilt sensor (mentioned in earlier responses) could be the culprit they are generally 'robust' and seem to rarely cause issues.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I will takena look at the bits that bave been suggested. Especially that the ECM (ECU??) Is properly strapped down.

Somome else suggested to me that if a blackbird has not been "loomfixed" then that can cause problems. My bike has onky done 16000 miles and no idea if its been 'fixed' or not. Can somone confirm?

Re: Hit bump engine cut out.

What year is your bike? The loom fix is essential for 99-01, less so on 02 onwards*. Yes a Bird can misbehave without the loom fix (earthing problem) but usually you see dash gauges doing strange things at the same time that the engine dies. In your case you mentioned a bump which is why I went with the ECM not being strapped down sufficiently.

    * later bikes occasionally suffer if you ride in a wet climate (like the UK & Ireland) but the loom changes generally sorted the issue.
