    Clutch problems

Hi Everybody im a newbie on here so be gentle with me.I have had my 2001 blackbird for 4 weeks now i traded my gixxer 750 for it as at the age of 53 it wasn't kind on my back and i had a trip to the TT coming up.I took the bird to the isle of man and it performed really well i covered over 1100 miles only problem which i had was the clutch is really snatchy. it works ok one minute then the next its grabbing when pulling away and there is a squealing noise coming from the clutch its really quite dangerous and can catch you out if not paying attention.I had the same thing with my new busa a few years ago it was fixed under waranty but i was never told the problem. The bike has covered 45k miles also if you hold the clutch in when in neutral for a few seconds and let go of the lever there is a loud bang from the clutch,it also rattles a bit till you pull the clutch in but ive read this is quite normal.I luckily have a spare low mileage engine in my garage and was going to use the clutch from that but i want to understand what the problem is rather that just change parts over.sorry for the long post

Check the pushrod, take off the sprocket cover and pull the pushrod out. Make sure it's clean, lightly clean it with fine wet and dry, grease and try that.

    Re: Clutch problems

I've abused the hell out of mine and never had anything quite as bad sounding as that. The one time it got really grabby was when the push rod was warped. It was also fine for street riding, only did it after doing burn outs and drag racing.Only way to fix a clutch is to take it apart, which isn't a big job.so you might as well get started.
Never heard a squealing sound from a clutch before.

You can remove the 3 bolts holding on the slave cylinder and take the whole thing off, give the lever a little squeeze just to make sure it's moving properly.
Friction plate wear limit is 3.5mm,they are 3.8 new, steels should be fine, only heat kills them, well warps them, put them on a glass surface and check, sorry can't remember the limit allowed.
It should slip if worn, sounds more like it has been apart before and put together wrong or the push rob is bent or the slave doesn't fully extend,or something but it doesn't sound worn.
If you need to pull the basket off you'll need the EBC tool, CT021,same one is used for ZX11,ZX12,ZX14,BUSA and a few other Suzuki's. The nut is staked and torqued to 94 ft lbs.(pretty sure anyway).

    Re: Clutch problems

Well I've got over 100K miles on the clutch on my Bird and the cover has never been off!

The push rod is always the first port of call, not only does it gather all sorts of road debris and chain lube fling which prevents smooth operation (grabby) but I have had the original one fail (stayed straight but the bonding between the solid end and the tube section failed)

I have had the squealing (almost a grating noise) a couple of times. On both occasions when I was making a very quick get away from junctions when commuting (some car drivers took exception to my filtering!) ...... the clutch has otherwise and subsequently performed perfectly. For yours to be doing similar on a regular basis and to be grabby and make banging noises is very unusual.

As Partsguy has said I also would be removing the cover to check the clutch. If the clutch plates have been changed before check that OE plates have been used (there are different outer and inner plates and these are identified by 'colour' on the edges of the tangs) these are by far the best. The other checks/wear limits are given in the https://www.cbrxx.com/honda-cbr-xx-re...al-1999-a.html

    Re: Clutch problems

Hi guys thanks for the replys the noise i have is more a grating rather than a squealing noise.it seems when on biting point the grating noise starts and the clutch seems to engage and then disengage on its own i was thinking warped plates. Im going to look at all the points that have been raised and report back
    thanks everyone
