got tank painted, don't remember where this small foam strip goes/does

Hey guys, I sent my tank and other parts off to get painted and was wondering where this went (I foolishly thought I'd remember). The tank is already installed so I can't just look around under it.

    I've attached a pic.

    Thanks!

PS: Also, I'm about to give Partzilla a grip of money just for two little cowl parts - I want the grab rail bolt rubber bolt caps (2) and I need to replace one of the collars that goes on the forward hook (cowl) bolts. Any chance anyone has these laying around?

I don't know if the attached photo's help or not, but.... Shown in the underside of my 1998 fuel tank with the insulated matt material. The part number you show for your "foam strips" is the same for all model years. The only two showing are the small rectangle patches of foam at either side of the tank near the filler panel attachement holes. I know that the two foam pads are not in the identical places, but one may have slide due to heat at some point. I don't think I noticed any other foam type material on the tank. I'm assuming that everything is present and correct for a OEM tank, I could be in error on that.

On second look: if you do the Partzilla look up for the 1997-98 model year you will see my pictured rectangles of foam as #17's . The parts you query are shown as #19 I think,...and I do not know where they go. I do not think my tank has them. There are a couple thin foam pieces that run along the interface of the dash panel filler panels, that touch the side of the fuel tank. They are very narrow,..maybe 1/4 inch wide and about 6 to 8 inches long. These attach to the dark grey filler panels though, not to the fuel tank.

Mother of bejesus... IIRC, there's nothing on the underside of my tank. Btw, I really was just talking about a little piece of foam strip, perhaps a 1/4 inch by 6 inches.

This makes me think... next time I take my tank off:

    a. I'll see if I have any foam like that.
    b. if not, why shouldn't I put heat shielding under there?

Hmm.. Round three: Have a close look at my picture #2 and #3 (from left to right). See where the "20 " is located on the photo date stamp? You can see the aforementioned "rectangle of foam,..but what's the thin sliver of black material running directly under the "20" ?....could that be your foam? It is not to be confused with the "tank edge trim" that goes from one side of the tank to the other, around the pinch weld.

Yes,...that big matt was part of the OEM stock set up. a bit of chat about it is located here:

Re: got tank painted, don't remember where this small foam strip goes/does

Well, I've owned my bike since it had only 770 miles on it and I know the PO didn't remove it. I'm guessing the 01's didn't have one. I also just remembered that a heat shield may do nothing since the airbox is there. I think I'd like some of that foam, though if only for possible sound deadening.

So, yeah, under #20, that's where I think it was, on the side. I'll take a peak this week and see what it might be there for. I do still have the foam strip.

    Thanks!

Oh man, I have a whole bunch of this sound deadener laying around - I think I'll install it.

Yep. Both sides, stick it on because it can easily be lost. Don't know if it really matters if it's lost anyway!

Probably not but I have it sitting on my workbench... I'll be curious to see if it even touches anything when it's all assembled, unless someone has a picture of that too.

The little bitty strips? They're high density. Pretty sure it provides some cushioning but without the bike in front of me I can't tell what.
