A/F issue i presume, need some help

Hey guys, just picked up a 1 owner older gentleman owned 97 with 19k, the only mod on it to my knowledge is a custom made Kerker 4-1 exhaust.. I have been experiencing choppy hesitation below 3k rpms on acceleration this makes it very difficult to take off without looking like a newbie and also limits the potential of taking off lol.. so my thoughts are the carbs aren't set up for a 4-1 setup vs what i think is 4-2-1-2 stock right? Anyways any help would be appreciated as I am %100 new to this caliber of bike lol

Pull the spark plugs and do a color check for starters let us know what you find. You need to see a tan to grey color

Look under the back seat and make sure that the ECU is firmly secured. I had a 97 with similar problems and it was because the ECU was bouncing around under the seat due to an aftermarket fender eliminator kit (OEM fender had been cut so the original pocket that the ECU was in had been removed). Once I strapped the ECU down with an elastic cord, all was good. Looks like you have an undertail kit so that might be it.

Also, from what I've read, the carbed bikes don't perform well with a K&N air filter. Check yours.

Yes the cv's don't like the airflow increase. Also be sure the air deflectors are in place up front on each corner. Do a thread search for them they've been talked about.

    "...below 3k rpms on acceleration...."

You are lugging the engine. Keep the bike over 3k.

You won't have any power even with perfect A/F below 3k.

I dont think you understand... this isnt my first carbeurated bike.. its not normal how much sputter this bike does below 3k.. i should be able to comfortably take off from idle without feeling like its going to cut out and stall..

The more I think about it, you probably just have dirty carbs. Try some Seafoam.

Agreed. I often have mine ('97) idling along in traffic at 2000 rpm (or less) in 5th or 6th and the pickup is smooth from that point so long as its slow acceleration. There should be no "sputtering" evident.

Sounds like its lean on the lower end. Mine came with 42 low speed jet, one was plugged and the top was striped. Local bike shop had 45's so I bought a set. I like being able to adjust idle mix so I drilled a small hole in plugs and they pop right off. Because the mix screws are a pia to get to and im to cheap to buy the extended mix screws so I drill a hole in each mix screw and solder a piece of wire with a 90 deg bend...its tacky but it works.started with mix screws 3 turns off the bottom, get the bike up to temp and set each screw for highest rpm and do it a few times, back each screw out 1/4 to 1/2 turn and check each exhaust pipe with infared temp gun...should be within 50 degrees, tweek the mix screws to make the number...I drilled the slides a little on mine..one drill size bigger..with my idle @ 1050 I can let the clutch out without opening the throttle, takes 2 bike lengths to get the clutch out, from there I can pin the throttle as fast as I can...it flat ass hauls, no more 5500 rpm wheelie, when I pin the throttle a tug on the bars has the front wheel up...didnt notice until someone told me, the rear wheel was spinning...not a lot..drop the air in the tire a little and it will pack the front tire @3500. Got a buddy with a 117 in h.d...I let him ride it...told him to run in down to 1500 in 4th..it pulls hard and smooth...no such thing as reading old, usted plugs, the part that matters is so far down the porcelain you have to cut the threads off to see it if you dont have the tool. I run stock exhaust, they have less than 1/2 lb of backpressure....I like quiet..bike has run 184 gps in 5 th gear with a +1 front sprocket.....this is my second b bird, the first one ran 179 on the salt flats 4500ft..I live @600 ft now...the factory main jet seems to cover it fine, ram air,air filter..is nothing compaired with air density..it was 118 last week and mine ran fine..factory idle/low speed is ragged ass lean...always better to be 4 click fat rather than 1 click lean..

Starts/idles ok? Doesnt run better with the choke on? Dirty carbs ie crap in the low speed jet...a pig to start, runs better with the choke, not running on all 4 holes...if you dont ride in winter get some av gas and mix 50/50 with pump gas..carbs wont need attention in the spring....and as stupid as it sounds, both my bikes ran better on 89 octane rather than 92 or 93 or race gas

Re: A/F issue i presume, need some help

Bike looks nice. Can't get much detail from the pictures, but I suspect the underfender has been bobbed, I don't see any rear turn signals, and the windscreen does not look stock.

I don't remember seeing a Kerker exhaust for an XX before, but Kerker was generally regarded as a hot-rodders accessory. I'd suspect that anyone who would install a Kerker might also jet the hell out of the bike, and it would be horribly rich at low speed, causing stutter and stumble.

Get somebody to ride behind you and see if the bikes smokes, or if they reek of gas when you stop for burgers. The choke idea is good as well, if it's lean it should smooth out with the choke on, or run that much worse if it's rich.

Either way, I'd get some seafoam and a tank or two of good fresh gas through it before tearing it apart, and you'll probably need new plugs for optimal performance.

So update guys, the bike has come into it really well, first I strapped down the loose ECU 😣, then I took it to my local no ethanol VP racing fuel station filled her up and treated her with startron for the last 6 tanks it is running like it should now mostly, it has very slight hesitation now in 6th gear pulls but I assume at that point im lugging the bike thanks for all the help
