    Low fuel indicator

I have a '98 XX and just completed the 24K maintenance. Adjusted valves,
and replaced cam chain tensioner. All the good stuff. Bike runs like a champ. Bought the bike in June and had no idea of its first ten years.

Ongoing question for me is does the low fuel light work? I have had the tank
with less than .8 gallons left according to the amount of gas it took to refill
and yet I have not noticed the low fuel indicator light up. Is the light a very
low intensity or is it possibly burnt out or an idication that the wiring is
    disconnected?

    Thanks,
    Keith

    Re: Low fuel indicator

Their is a small plug under the seat near the battery on the left side.
It is the low fuel sensor, make sure it is connected.
Mine comes on when the fuel guage goes just equal to the red line.
Till they pry the handlebars from my cold dead fingers! XX

    Re: Low fuel indicator

Does the fuel gauge work when you turn the key?? If not, the fuel sensor, as kacbrxx stated, isn't connected or not connected right. Spray the contacts with WD40..

If it does work there mat be something wrong with the lightbulb itself, or maybe a lose contact in the cockpit....

here a pix of how it looks inside the cockpit..

    Re: Low fuel indicator

It looks like my fuel gauge is acting up too.

Does your fuel gauge drop below the red "empty" line when you turn off the ignition, like the rest of the gauges?? Because mine stays at about 40% full when I turn off the ignition, regardless of the actual fuel level.

And the gauge never shows a fuel level below 20%, even if my fuel tank is bone dry. So there's definately something fishy going on. The question is: How do I figure out if it is the fuel level SENSOR, or the gauge itself that is defective???

    Re: Low fuel indicator

My 97 XX fuel light worked fine until it had 30k miles and the light stopped working. Testing the light and it came on so it wasn't the bulb but I didn't bother to fix it. The fuel gauge works fine. Check your fuel light bulb first, you don't have to remove it to check. Look at the manual, under the seat, there is a connector that goes to the fuel tank. Disconnect it, and use a piece of wire to jump some pins (check the manual to see which ones) and the fuel light will come on if it's not burned out. Mine wasn't so it was something wrong with the low fuel sender inside the fuel tank.
