    Clutch Rattle

This is on my Mrs Blackbird 140,000km 2003.

We just did the clearances and put in a new cam chain and guides (New CCT had no effect). It is great now! But now I can hear the clutch vibration/rattle better, so want to address it. BTW it shifts fine and she says it does not slip.

It is quiet during fast idle warm up and when it slows down to idle (1000rpm) you get the rattle. I pull the clutch lever in and there is no rattle. So I am pretty sure its clutch.

So I thought to replace the friction plates, should I also do the metal plates and or the springs?. Should I pull the basket and have a look behind it? What do you need to hold the basket or will a rattle gun work?.

    Thank you for any advice.

To be honest thinking you may be chasing your tail on this one. I believe it is an inherent trait.

    Re: Clutch Rattle

Never met a Bird that didn't have a rattly clutch. I did my cam chain and guides etc at 200,000 kms. Clutch still rattles on start up. If it ain't broke don't spend money on it.

Adjust the idle speed up a few hundred rpm.

    Thanks for the advice.

Because it is the Mrs' bike I feel like I have to address everything she winges about.

I would be interrested to hear from anyone who has actually done the clutch change. The friction plates are not that expensive really. Of course, Im not going to bother if it makes no difference.

Yes the idle is too low, factory setting is 1150 this does solve a lot of the rattle. BTW as the others say 'it is normal' ..... makes me worry, my 80K Daily Bird has no clutch rattle and is on its original clutch

I try to set at 1100.. Initially after fast idle, it drops to 1000 and stabilises at about 1100 when warm (my manual says idle is 1100). I might secretly bring her idle up and see if she stops complaining.

That would be my first shot I run a little higher about 1300 with no ill effects

I agree raise the idle speed to 1100, there is something with BB engine that at low idle you will notice a very strange sound like that it could be the chain guide like with the f4i.

In the interest of self preservation you might want to amend these. (chuckle) If she frequents this board someone's liable to be sleeping on the couch for a day or 2 LOL
