    ecu/ecm flash

Is it possible to flash the computer on an FI bird? An '00 if it makes a difference. I'm trying to chase down a rich mixture problem which has the bike belching black smoke when I get on it, and smelling bad (too rich) when at idle. My muffler tips are getting that black soot also, I haven't checked the plugs which have 5000km on them. The old ones were a nice tan colour.
The bike has been running rich since I bought it.
It was purchased with a 4-2-1 exhaust on it which has since been replaced with an OEM.
I've already replaced the FPR and run two cans of seafoam (not all at once) through the tank, I'm sure by now it's all worked through.
I've checked the PAIR it isn't blocked off.
A new k&n was installed 5000km ago to replace the blocked up (pleats were completely covered) OEM filter, didn't change the smell or smoke.
The bike still runs great, I just don't want to start fouling plugs. I also get about 250km/tank.
I'm asking about the flash, because when I purchased the bike it was running rich with a 4-2-1 exhaust on it but the seller didn't know what was done when the exhaust as installed. I know you can teka and/or yosh box suzukis but I don't know about the bird.
Am I missing anything in my trouble shooting?

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

Teka and Yoshi never offered versions for the bird unfortunately...i don't believe the Bb ECM offers such a function of rom/eprom flashing...you might suffer the rich mixture problem because of faulty sensors...

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

Nope the oem ecu on the bird cannot be flashed easily. Anything is possible but if you have to resort to unsoldering rom chips and sticking ep-rom ones in there, you know its not really doable.
The power commander III, set up on a dyno could help you solv your problem but as Bullet has said, you wanna make sure that all the sensors are reading correct brfoe you proceed.
I'd pay a lil attention to the O2 sensor if your bike has one.

    Will work for parts.

Nope no O2 sensor on mine, I guess I'll have to get out my ohm meter and start looking at sensors.

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

couple of quick things will cause rich mixture, there are many others I guess

ect, the 2 pins on the top side of the triangle will measure 1.6k ohms when cold
low compression - reduces intake air volume when on intake cycle - the fuel remains the same = rich mixture

    incorrect plugs

    incorrect air filter

not much else gives problems on the BB, I would check new plugs

does it still smoke when engine hot ?

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

It only smokes when I get on it, plugs are ngk iridium 6216 (same as CR9EHIX-9) which were installed 5000km ago, but I'll pop them out and have a look. My ect was reading 437 ohms when cold hopefully I have found the culprit, I'll still check the plugs while I'm in there.

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

never heard of those plugs mate but it is important to have the correct temp plug

the ect is in fact 2x sensors
    1. the temp gauge center bottom pin to ect body and reads about 500ohms so yours sounds normal
    2. the second sensor responds differently, the top two pins should read 1.6k ohms when cold, one is the sensor pin and the other
is ecu ground, they do not read anything to the body of the ect at this point

but according to the manual when the ect is at 80c the sensor pin (pink wire) reads 50kohms approx to
the body of the ect, never checked it and really don't understand how this functions but I assume it tells the ecu
when the engine is at full running temp

when the plug is off the ect and ignition is on you should read 5v on the pink wire to battery ground, this is
the ref voltage and it feeds the sensor.

    JoWee.

Check out my history threads mate. I had the exact same issue with my 2000 Bird. Over fuelling, sooty exhausts, strong smell, running ruff, lack of power etc. The FI light also flashed faulty knock sensor. After a year of searching for an answer I was helped by a member on this site. The 2000 ECU has issues, major issues! The long and short of it was a swop with a 2003 (pre cat) ECU and chips for the keys. I cleared down the faults flashes on the FI system and turned the key. What a difference! My Bird now runs like a new bike! I managed to pay £400 for the 2003 ECU and chips ( the chips are easy to change on the keys). Trust me buddy the 2000 ECU is screwed, this is the solution to you problem. If you need further info just ask.

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

EGAD! hopefully I won't have to go and change the ECU, but at least if I do, we don't have any HISS in Canada. Did you have to swap any sensors with the new ecu? What about the analogue/digital dash?

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

so the digi dash ecu just pops in there without issue then, I guess I can't see why not, not sure that is the issue here - I guess if some nice person would let you try one first, I've had serious issues for the last year with poor idle (won't idle cold) starts on 2/3 cylinders and runs rich on the weak cylinders, once hot engine runs normalish, about to replace complete cylinder head - that will be the whole top end changed from the tank down

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

I found a '99 ecu for $100 I'll give it a shot. It was on a bike that was running fine until it ran into something.

    Re: ecu/ecm flash

Hi, I have the same problem with my XXY. My bike is injected and has HISS. I am not clear why the change for an ECU 2003
I understand that by 2003 they were already bringing catalysts
From already thank you very much
    enjoying the life !!!!
