how to - build a manual fan switch

so I setup a manual fan switch today,

thanks xxnutz for the info on which are the positive and negative wires.

    how to
step 1 - take of the clutch side fairings.
step 2 - locate the thermal fan switch (right in the radiator - black and silver thing which has a black wire attached)
step 3 - use one of those fancy connectors that kinda cuts into the wire but doesnt break it and attach it to the black wire (the ground to the fan). - Picture 1

Step 4 - from the blue connector, i took the red wire to the switch.
Step 5 -from the switch i pulled the black/grey wire (with the darker blue end) to the frame to complete the circuit (anywhere you can find a bolt, we used the one bolt that keeps the rad in place). - picture 3

Note - essentially what the thermal switch does, once it gets up to temperature it connects and closes the circuit. with the switch you end up bypassing the thermal switch and giving you complete control.

estimated time taken - 1/2 hour or so.

here's some pics, (sorry for the delayed upload)

    Regards,

    Peter

(sorry - pics 1 and 2 are flipped in order)

    Re: which wire - help

According to my Haynes manual...the pos wire to the fan is BLACK W/BLUE STRIPE. GROUND is all BLACK. Hope this helps, Cheers.

Re: how to - build a manual fan switch

I would add here that, while this method is fine for 2000 and under models, it is most definately NOT applicable to 2001 and newer units whose fans are controlled by the ECM via the fan control relay.

BTW, if you were to install the switch to the black wire so it supplied a path to ground, it would leave the fan switch functional so it would still run the fan if you forgot while still allowing you to turn the fan on at lower temps.

so how would you go about rigging up a manual fan switch for say a 2001 bird?

There is (according to my trusty Haynes manual) a green wire with a green stripe in the rear connector (the one that includes the rear lights) that comes from the ECM and goes to the fan control relay. This is the wire that the ECM uses to control the fan relay by grounding it. If you tap into this wire and run it to a switch that is connected to ground, you will be able to run the fan at will, but leave the ECM able to turn the fan on as well.

    Does that make sense?

They will only work in 2000 and earlier, buddy. On the 01 and up the fan relay is controlled by the ECM.

Re: how to - build a manual fan switch

What would be nice is an automatic function which allowed the fan to run after the ignition was switched off to continue cooling the motor untill it cooled enough to switch itself off, if that makes sense. some cars have this.

You need a Wolsentech TDR-P and adapt the wiring as shown here
