Rear Light not working + Loom Nightmares

    Hi All,

I need some help with my bird (CBR1100XX Model 1999 PGM FI first model.) as I am stuck now for a while with an Electrical issue.

A few month back my Tail light (bottom) stopped working while regular light is on. My front beam (both High/Low) are working fine.
when I break, both Top and Bottom light work fine, index also work without any issues.

I have had many issues in my Loom in the past and it always ended up being a corrosion issue (previous owner left the bike outside for 3 year not using it at all). Usually a good clean on the connectors would fix any issues I have but in this case, no matter what i do I cannot get the rear light working. Looking at the wire diagram did not help either as I simply do not understand how the Break Light and Index would work and not the normal ones. I gave a good clean to the cluster of Greens in the middle of the loom as it was a huge source of issues in the past but it did nothing.

Recently I also experience the FI light turning on after I would hit a rough patch of road, this to me indicated that I must be having a false contact somewhere but I would not manager to find where until yesterday.
I bought a Second hand loom for that 1999 model and tried replacing the entire thing, it worked out just fine until I tried to fire the bike which failed as the FI light was blinking. After looking through the install i noticed that unfortunately the loom is not the right one as I am missing 1 connector in the condom under the tank. while changing the loom I found out that the previous Starter relay switch was loose so I finally found where my bike was losing the FI after hitting a bump.

BUT that being said, my rear light still did not work ! once again Index work fine, and on Breaks (front and back) both rear bulbs work fine. I will have to put back the old loom as I am still missing that 1 connector so unfortunately I wasted my money on this one. but I have no idea anymore where the issue with my rear light comes from.

    Anyone ever experienced this ?

Have you tried replacing the bulb. There are 2 elements used. One is running the other is brake. You can loose one and the other will work fine because they are separate elements. The FI may be an intermittent. Does it give a code when you start the bike on the side stand. Make sure the ECM is tied down. If it's left loose it will trigger false fails.

Hi, Sorry for late reply I was out of town and just got back.
I have already replaced the bulbs so it was not the issue, I did manage to source a loom with fits and it has solved both of my issues. I think this one will remain a mistery.

Thanks a lot for the help and input.

Re: Rear Light not working + Loom Nightmares

Hi XX ers, recently replaced lowbeam bulb, then it and hi blew out..fuse ok...checked what I could with meter (with limited knowledge). Ended up at bike shop where he said battery cable ends 'dirty'..alternator checked out. Riding into work yesterday..dark out..noticed low beam flickering however slightly, like a bad flashlight. On way home in daylight, lowbeam was on but blew again on my 1/2 hr. commute. What could be causing the voltage surge that's killing the bulbs but not the fuse?..thanks for any and all helpps..bike is a 2000

Put a meter on the battery terminals and check your voltage at idle and 5000 rpm once it's warmed up. You should see 13.5 or there abouts at idle and no more than 14.6 14.7 t 5000.

Re: Rear Light not working + Loom Nightmares

Hi Bees, thanks for replying..I get 14v at both idle and 5k... I’m ready to take off plastic and tank and hook up jumper bulb, jiggle wires and see what happens..or maybe put a smaller amp fuse and do the same and go from there. Rode over bumpy road after getting back from shop 2 wks.ago and it was ok..(for a short time) then flickered and out. Wiring harness might be hiding intermittent short and causing voltage spike?

I'd go in use the technical section at electorsport.com there 2 red letter sections. One of them is a cold check of the R/R. Go through that and see what comes of it. I'm betting its gonna proof out as bad. That's why your popping bulbs. It shouldn't be that high. I would also put the battery on a charger overnight and have it load checked. You may be running on the stator. Let us know what you find out and we can go from there.
