97 cluster malfunctioning... now dead battery

Hey all. 97 carb owner here

For the last 6 months the lights on the two left gauges (gas & temp) have worked on and off (mostly off). Didnt think anything of it...

Now theres a new problem. About 5 days ago the needle for the speedometer would drop down and bounce back while driving. It started doing it more and more the next day.... now the tachometer is doing it.

The battery died about 4 days ago and i charged it back up, drove it around blah blah. Go to drive it again today and its dead again!

Whats wrong with the cluster? Is that making the battery go dead?

You probably have two separate problems. The lighting is most likely the bulbs slightly loose in their sockets. The needles however are most likely an indication of a problem with the charging circuit ... battery, rectifier or stator. In my case it was the battery failing. Have the battery load tested, or if its old replace it, and check voltage across a known good battery at 5000rpm. If not around 14.3v then investigate rec and stator.

The waving needles is a classic sign of Charging system failure as Liegh has stated. Make sure your battery is charged overnight then as stated have it load tested. Then take a walk through the fault finding link on this page.

Route 191 formerly Route 666 Some say that this section of the
road has 1100 curves in 95 miles.

Get a new battery...classic symptoms on a carbie with a poor battery!

My dog always pee’s on my wheels before a trip...why is that?
