    Garden Ornament or Spares?

Just had a lovely 900 mile ride around Wales. Stator + R/R had done 2,600 miles before the ride and I was getting some confidence back in her. Unfortunately (or fortunately because I got home) the charging light came on around 25 miles from home. A quick check with the multimeter when I got back confirmed that the battery wasn't charging. Put a damper on what had been a great ride on a bike that, for me, handles and goes better than most. Don't know whether it's the stator yet but if it is, this one lasted 3,500 miles and I'm not sure where to go next? Good money after bad? The stator has become a consumable. I've been running a loom bypass R/R and I thought that had done trick. Anyway, I will investigate tomorrow and decide what to do.

Where did you get the stator from?

The last one was from West Country Windings as was the R/R. (Came together.)

I too run a West Country Windings stator along with a SAH847 reg/rec from Roadstercycle.com. Nearly 9k now with no issues. Did have an issue with strange charging rates late last year but i traced that to the cheaper Lithium Battery i installed, since replaced with a Shorai lithium. All good now with a constant 14.4/14.5 showing on the voltmeter. I would swap out the battery first before anything else.

Cheers, I’ll have a look tomorrow. At my age I need time to recover after a longish ride.

perhaps have a real auto electrician do a full check
i have a finned rectifier regulator from tourmax and that seems to work
if you had prior issue it can be that some of the harness wiring is scorched and needs to be replaced
the damaged wiring may be causing an overload

I'm certainly no electrician so if I can find a good one who's prepared to take a look that's a way forward. When you say harness wiring I assume that you mean the loom wiring? As I said above, I've been running an R/R that goes straight to the battery bypassing the loom so I don't think any of the original wiring is involved with this problem.

    charging light ?

if you are going to fit RR spend the money on a mosfet

what voltage did you see on the battery - engine running ?

This, when I had my R/R and stator issues a year back the mechanic eventually traced it back to the main fuse block near the battery that was melted allowing power to the R/R but not out again to the battery

    Re: Garden Ornament or Spares?

So, just taken some readings off the 3 stator phases.

    1) For all 3, there's no continuity to ground. 😊
    2) Resistance between 1-2, 2-3 and 1-3 was all at 0.5 ohms so the circuits are good and in spec. 😊
    3) @ 2000 rpm, VAC for 1-2 was 11.8 VAC, for 2-3 was 10.8 VAC and for 1-3 was 11.8 VAC. 😒

So if I'm correct, 1) and 2) are good signs and 3) a not so good sign. Although the 3 VAC readings are close they seem way too low. Last time I did this on a good stator I was getting around 30 VAC @ 2000 rpm. I think this means the stator is fried?

I'll take another look to make sure I set the multimeter to VAC correctly (but I'm pretty sure I did) when the battery is charged.

Just checked my Varadero and that's putting out around ~23 VAC on all 3 phases at tickover (~1200 rpm) so that would seem to be conclusive.

fairb, those readings are similar to a friends who had a WCW stator. This was after 400? miles. Turned out it was dodgy. Call them and send it back. They replaced his. You should get 50/60 AC volts on each phase at 3/4k rpm. As i said mine is now at 8.5k with no issues..............so far.

    Re: Garden Ornament or Spares?

assuming you are reading the stator with it disconnected from the RR then they are way too low

at idle you should be seeing about 16-20vac and reved to 5k you should be seing 50vac +

you should be reading these with the stator disconnected from the RR

Thanks adeyren, I thought also that was a good place to start. I contacted them on their site yesterday to see if they could help. I’ll follow up with them today.
