    Fairing Repair/Replacement?

I have an 01 Blackbird with the silver fairings. The right front fairing has some cracks and gouges that I don't think can be repaired but I don't know. If I wanted to replace the fairing am I better off looking for a good quality used one or looking for one of the non-OEM aftermarket ones?

I think the fairings on the Blackbird are fiberglass. No? Thanks!

The fairings are ABS, I believe. OEM is, by all accounts, the better way to go if you want top quality and fit. New ones are still available from dealers.

    Re: Fairing Repair/Replacement?

Oem's come with the correct color, decals and fit as they are supposed to. (and with a higher price tag.)

Aftermarkets can be be made from a variety of materials, most likely wont have decals (if they do, they may not be correct), Bolt hole will line up, sometimes this needs a little persuasion, There have been mixed results from members that have purchased aftermarkets ranging from really happy they saved the money (holes not aligning 100% withstanding) to returning the pieces of crap for a refund.

I went the oem path when i replaced my rh lower. (1klm hr drop) Then sold the (barely) damaged unit on ebay for half what the new one cost me. I went new cause the local panel expert was going to charge 75% of the new cost to repair, paint match and spray and then add the decal. Chances are that you are not going to find a second hand unit with no damage at all.. and aftermarkets usually come in a set.. Hmmm maybe you could go for a better color (the best is blue, dont go for black cause there is absolutely nothing special that color.. everyone that doesnt have any sort of imagination has a black one.. ) and replace the entire set..

The fairings aren't abs -they're ppl,(polypropylene?) anyway nothing but melted ppl will adhere to it,so you need another piece to fix it with.Maybe some years are abs, mine sure isn't.
If you need to replace one piece you're better off with original, even 2 parts.Plus you will lose resale value with ANY aftermarket plastics.

Thanks Al, I wasn't 100% certain of the ABS, just knew they aren't glass.

I have seen skilled 'plastic welders' rebuild nosecones from boxes of bits! Anything is possible with the right labour .......... but that can be more expensive than buying new with real basket cases. OE is by far the best and you will sell the damaged part on Ebay!

The lowers are glass filled nylon (PA6 GF) and the upper cowl is ABS

Yep, best to stay OEM for the lowers........IMHO

    Re: Fairing Repair/Replacement?

Thanks everybody. Sounds like the way to go is OEM and sell the old one. I was surprised to see a number of damaged right fairings for sale on Ebay with asking prices approaching $200. What would an OEM run new?

    Re: Fairing Repair/Replacement?

I was thinking of getting my lower left side fairing replaced as well since it had some gouges from the previous owner(s). I priced OEM at about $380 from the dealers. As stated by others, the OEM come painted with decals. On a good note the parts guy said that since I have silver (like you), the fairing should match better than if I had a black bike since any fading will be less noticeable on the lighter color fairing.

This place lists the lower cowl for $308, but I am not sure if this comes painted and decaled.

    Re: Fairing Repair/Replacement?

Quick note about dealing with Cheap Cycle Parts- I purchased front and rear sprockets for Kaw Sherpa, and the rear didn't match the stock wheel hub. They insisted that I must have changed the wheel because their fitment chart said the sprocket was correct. It took two weeks, and me sending a dimensioned drawing of the stock hub, for them to allow me to return the sprocket. They still seemed pretty put out. On plastic fairing repair, the black filler pieces around the tank are polypropelene and can't be glued, but the side and nose pieces can be glued nicely with plumbing pipe glue (abs rated). It kind of melts the surface, like welding, so be sparing if its visible. My headlight mounting tabs had broken, and are now very solid. Intact new/used OEM still best. Good luck.

I have used cheapcycle parts a few times and had great fast service. I imagine the plastic will come non painted but primed as there is not choice of colour
