    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

    Hi Epoc

I use bulbs like the following ones in my dashboard. I fitted them in 2012 and had no problems or failures in them since. They are much brighter than standard and the dash looks much better with them fitted. They also use less power and generate less heat than normal bulbs. I chose these because LED's are usually quite directional and do not provide a good spread of light so with these there are 20 LEDs per bulb emitting light in all directions.

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

Thanks Dave. That looks like a shipload of LEDs. The ones I bought only had 5 LEDs and were plenty bright. How bright is your dash with these fitted?

    Hi Epoc

Yes it does seemj like a load of LEDs but the effect in the dash I think is good. Here are some pics that I have just taken (excuse the slight blur my hand is obviously not so steady at the slower shutter speeds!). Hopefully you get an impression of their brightness.

These don't seem very much different to the ones that you brought so maybe the reliability is just a quality of manufacture thing. I had to get these bulbs in the right way round so there is no additional circuitry in them to swap polarity.

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

Thanks for that Dave. They look similar in brightness to the ones I fitted. If you've had a good run out of them, I might give these a try.

    Hi Epoc

Good luck I hope they work as well for you as they have for me.

I might fill the seam between led and base with 5 minute araldite before I install them, see if the extra hold keeps them together. I'll report back how that goes.

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

That actually might work Leigh. I tried super glue, but it itself is too brittle. A good epoxy might do the trick

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

So all you have to do is take the old bulbs out and pop the T-10 in and you're done? And T-10 is the size or whatever they go by? And how much do they cost?

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

I bought mine recently off ebay. Took a while to get to me but pleased with the Dash. This was one of the first things I did because former owner let all the bulbs be burned out.

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

Just done this to my bike using T10 LEDs off eBay. Wow! What a difference. I don't understand why Honda would get faces made with blue numbers and then fit bulbs so dim the effect doesn't show up, weird.

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

I did this a while back after a couple of bulbs popped. Used LEDs like this: 2/4/10x T10 501 194 168 W5W 5 SMD LED ERROR FREE CANBUS Car Side Light Bulb Lamp | eBay

I did try with the 20smd versions but found they were a bit too long, they also weren't reliable. The above ones have lasted ages.

I replaced the warning lights with LEDs too but the oil pressure lamp didn't want to work with an LED and the stand lamp has died 3 times now so a normal bulb will be going back in there.

Hi, I am about to swap the 4 dashboard bulbs with T10 led. I chose Philips Ultinon which is a bit pricey but another world from chinese rubbish found on the market.
I just have to make up my mind between 4000 and 6000 °K colour temperature; what do you think ? Probably 6000 daylight effect would be too bright and clear for night riding..

I'm not familiar with how many lamps there are, but are you referring to the lights for the Tach and speedo? 6000K is rather "blue" or about as "cold" as you can get, I would be surprised if you end up liking it, but everyone has their preference. It'll likely overpower the colors of the Tach markings in an unnatural way.

4000K will look very white without any discernable yellow, and 5000K will start to look blue.

If you're looking to replace warning/indicating lamps with LED, you'll want to match the LED color you the indicator color (amber with amber, green with green, red with red...) Putting a "white" LED lamp behind a colored lens just washes out the color it's intended to be.

    Have fun getting behind there!

    Re: LED mounted in dashboard

We should make some kind of sticky topic for these tech bits - for example

    - What type of bulbs are used in digital clock Bird's turn signal / neutral / oil / high beam
    - is there a brand of SMD's that should be used if one decides to swap the OEM digi clock smd's?

Yes, I am referring to the lights for the Tach and speedo. Me too I guessed that 6000 K led would make the instruments markings looking unnatural.. I am going for the 4000 K ones then, there are four of them.
No need to touch warning/indicating lamps and by the way you are right, to get the best risult the led color has to match the color of the plastic; this also goes for the braking/tail lights.
I already had a lot of fun since the front of the bike is already completely dismantled, but we'll be soon hitting the roads again 😉
