Cali Salvage Question?
A blackbird friend of mine crashed his bird a while back, insurance totoal it, he bought it back from salvage yard, now he's trying to register it. At the DMV, they said they can't find the sticker. Do you know what the DMV is talking about? Does he need to get some special certification done to the bike or something?
Thanks,
Obby

Re: Cali Salvage Question?
Obby,
I had some problems reg the bike I got from you because the guy who polished the frame removed the sticker. I had to take bike to one of the special insp stations here in Phoenix. A real PIA because I had to wait all damn morning until MVD got their act together. The insp took about 15 to 20 minutes.... One of the inspectors said they had to compare all the VINs off the frame and engine.... Is the bike in CA??

Re: Cali Salvage Question?
Hey Dave, What a pain. I didn't have any problems registering the '97. Probably because it was still in CA. They didn't even look at it.
Anyways, this guy is in CA. I think the sticker is missing on it too. So he probably has to do what you did, go to an inspection station of some kind.
Thanks,
Obby

Re: Cali Salvage Question?
I don't know the specific answer to your question regarding registering a bike that has a salvage title, but I'm going to guess that DMV approaches it with the same kinds of inspections they do with a first time registration. A month ago, after moving back to Calif with two 49 state bikes ('03 XX and '05 FJR) I bought in Nevada while I lived there, here's what the DMV personnel went out and verified on both bikes:
VIN stamped into the steering head
Sticker on the Frame with VIN and date of manufacture *
Engine no. stamped into the engine case **
EPA smog certification sticker under seat
* I recall the DMV clerk having to ask someone about what to fill out on her form, since my '03 XX has a November '02 date of manufacture (he told her it's still an '03 model).
** On the XX, this is just above the oil filler cap

Re: Cali Salvage Question?
I totalled my RC51 and made it a race bike. Totalled the XX and turned it back in to the insurance company today.
Sorry no help here, but I think I WIN with a high count of 2!!!
