    Fork oil quick question?

    Hi all,

I'm going to replace the fork oil and I forgot what the capacity is?

    - How much total fork oil I need for BOTH forks? (I just want to see how many quarts I need to buy. I know the actual volume is set by oil level)

    - I have a quart of Honda SS7 (what I have in the fork now) and a quart of Belray fork oil. Can I mix the 2 together?

    - I think I'll just suck out whatever I could from the fork top and refill it.

    Thanks.
    -mike-

    Re: Fork oil quick question?

It´s recommended that you remove the forks and pump the fork tube up and down several times until the old oil is completely drained.

According to service manual the recommended fork fluid is Honda suspension fluid SS-8 and the capacity is 486 +/- 2.5 cm3 (16,4 +/- 0,08 US oz). You should use the same oil in both forks, avoiding use of different grades and also remember to check the fork oil level (air gap) to the specified 154mm (with the spring removed).

One week ago I changed the fork oil from my 97´BB and I filled with MOTUL 10 W Synthetic. It works great.

16oz in each fork. I use one bottle of Race Tech synthetic US 10 weight.
Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

    Re: Fork oil quick question?

On Motul products. I use many, including oil, coolant, and highly recommend Motul. I suggest you do a search of fork oil weight. Weight will affect re-bound, I think. Plus one, on taking the time to empty all the oil, don't mix oils, and while your there, re-do your front end. I don't mind spending your money. LOL

One more info: there are a variety of Motul´s fork oils with different viscosities for different applications. I used Fork Oil Expert Medium 10W.

    Re: Fork oil quick question?

Thank you all, I appreciate the info.
The stock 97 XX came with 10w (Honda SS8). It was too harsh. I replaced it last time with Honda SS7 (5w) and it was better so I'll probably stay with 5w.
