How many miles should I get out of a set of Ebc? I put sets on both f & r of the bike about 4000 miles ago, (average riding with no heavy breaking) now I had a new tire put on this week and the mechanic told me I should replace them. Is he just trying to up-sale me or should I replace them?

"Miles" is not an effective way to measure brake pad life, really.

Check the wear grooves (if present) and decide for yourself. He doesn't know when you replaced them last and is probably of the mindset that you should change them when you change your tires. Look at them and even go the length of measuring the thickness of the material left and comparing it to what EBC says should be the minimum thickness. I eyeball mine for thickness and remaining meat content monthly, but I brake hard and late..........especially when throwing it into a nice tight turn.

He's full of it,it would take all stop and go with a lot of stop,to wear out pads that fast.

Nope. I have used EBC on many bikes and they will last much longer than 4000 unless the brakes are dragging or something else is wrong with your braking system. Check to make sure the linked brakes are not dragging

For your references, my 97 XX has 45k miles and the rear is on the 3rd set and the front is on the 2nd set. The EBC last quite a bit more than 4000 miles, unless you ride with your brakes engaged :-)

I used to rotate my pads around when I had EBC or SBS. (OEM at the moment on '07) Between front left/right & rear. Can't do it with the OEMs.

I found that due to the linked brakes, the fronts would wear differently, probably since I use the link from the rear a lot when in heavy traffic. Rotating them around evened out the wear. Try pulling them out & checking them, put the 2 best pairs in the front (best two of each left & rights).

Well I pulled off the calipers both on the front and the result is = L/side caliper inside pad fat, outside thin. R/side inside pad thin, outside pad fat? What could be the cause of uneven wear on EBC with 4000 miles?

Just about any caliper with single sided pistons is going to wear unevenly. The side with the pistons is doing just about all the work so that side is going to wear faster.

But the pistons are on the outside... You would expect them to be thin on the inside on both sides if it was sticking caliper or pistons.

You should be able to see where the pistons were pressing against the back of the pads, are these marks only on the back of the pads that were on the outsides?

By nature the EBC pads should last 5000 miles unless there is a problem with the rotor or so. yes there are many bike that go twice that much. Depending on use of the bike what pad compound you use. Keep in mind the xx is a heavy bike and depending on how much you use them like heavy trafic, down hill stopping, passenger or like some riders ride the brake. Also as simple as it is to instal pads, many shops do not depress the piston all the way in when changing pads. So you get that pad to ride the rotor and kills the life of the pad. Bottom line if you use the bike every day 4000 miles on pads is normal wear.
