Hi All,

I have been thinking about getting an XX for a while now. I currently ride a 954RR. Anyway, I have been studing the dos equis for a bit and i keep coming back to the brake system. I have read many things about the system and few of them are favorable. Has anyone looked into simply replacing the system with a traditional setup. I am no engineer and this may be more difficult than it seems, but I'd like some input/feedback on this chore. I was bitten once by too much front brake in a turn and wish for it not to happen again, my fault or not. Thanks and I look forward to your responses.

Bryan

You can get "de-linking" kits for the brake system from any reputable XX parts dealer. I'm sure John's Bike Bits have them, and I know for sure Jaws have them.

But there is really nothing wrong with the linked brakes system. The only thing you MIGHT not like, is the fact that you can't trail your rear brakes to decrease your cornering radius (because the front brakes will cancel out the tip-in effect). This only applies to the track though. For street use, the linked brakes work like a charm! The fact that a little rear brake is "automatically" trailed every time you squeeze that front brake lever helps stabilize the bike, especially when braking down from supersonic speeds.

If there is criticism of the Bird it's not the braking, it's the suspension. Plus one on the above.

I've delinked my brakes with just a couple of braided lines, it's not that hard and now no surprises. I did like the linked brakes most of the time bit not at low speeds. Just can't teach and old dog new tricks I guess.?

Thanks, Guys,

All your input helps. I'm with Meddy on the new tricks deal. Why get so convoluted when the traditional way has worked well for so long? Anyway, I might look into the simple approach.

I have read that with the linking system, the front calipers are mounted on a wicked system that feeds pressure to the rear. Is that affected or does it need to be changed? Thanks again.

The only thing you need to replace, is the brake lines. There's nothing to it really, easy peasy..!

Unless new things are tried in prototype and then made it into production, then there would be nothing new in motorcycling. We may as well all ride (gulp) Harleys.

Without progressive thinking and attitudes, ABS would still just be a theory.

+1 on what Nutter said. Allthough the traditional way has worked well, there's nothing wrong with making progression and improvements?

I love my linked brakes! When you need to brake really hard in an emergency situation, it's nice to only have ONE thing to concentrate on: not locking the front wheel. I've never experienced a rear wheel lockup whilst applying the front brakes. Well not before the rear wheel lifts off from the tarmac anyway..!
