What kind of set-up do you need to have everything to change your own tires?

I know you need the balancer/weights

What other things?

How much would it cost a person to buy everything they need to do tire changes yourself. I did my tires once with Tim in his garage but that was 2 years ago and can't recall what all we used.

Hi Nick,

Check out the No-Mar tire changer site. I have the Classic model and one of their balancers too. These things are high quality tools and well worth it if you change tires very often at home. Check out the videos and tools on the web site below.

No-Mar: product

Just my 2 cents but;

- proper tire bars - or - 2' pry bars

- 2 to 4 rim protectors - or plastic bottles cut into wide strips

- tire slipper - aka - dish soap and water in a spray bottle

- stick on tire weights

- 2 automotive car stands (use with bike axle for tire balancing)

- a friend

or

Get a No-Mar.

I have changed to many tires by hand to even bother trying to keep track of anymore. I have changed them in garages/parking lots/ basements/front room etc etc etc. the biggest problem that I have found, when doing your own tires , is not beating the shit, out of the finish on your rims. You may get lucky on 1 , 2 or 4 tires, but in the end you WILL mar your rim with the end of a pry bar.

Question.
How many tires a year are you looking at doing? If only 1 set/rear per year, either do it by hand, or remove the wheel/tire, and take it to a shop.

I do between 10 and 20 tires a year, so I ended up going the "NO-MAR" route myself.

Lou

I use this set up. Once you learn the trick it's a piece of cake. Cheap to!

N1K,
Good to see your still around.

I too have just bought the Harbor Freight changer.
I plan to add the The Mojolever MOJO lever.

I haven't changed a bike tire yet with this rig, but it did a good job on my Farmall front tire and one for a trailer.

The Bird and Magna are on good rubber. Guess the GSXR will be the first test.

I pay $20.00 off the bike. The scratches and bent rotors are free.

Of course the shop is 1 hour away too.

N1K, didn't you put the Carazolli (sp) wheels on your bike? If so, I would be changing them myself too.

I'm going to do it because we go through 6-8 sets of tires a year at my house. Worth doing it for me.
