| Where to buy 18t sprocket
Where are you folks buying 18t countershaft sprockets? Should bring the speedometer fairly close to actual speed. It makes sense to gear up, the minor difference in top end dosen't really matter, but would expect slight improvement in gas mileage. Probably no more 2nd gear power wheelies but 1st gear should be more controllable.

Got mine from White Buffalo Racing. Awesome mod, actually. 2nd gear is suddenly worth using and the powerband is much more predictable.

I ordered mine from White Buffalo Racing almost two weeks ago... they are severely backordered. |

Same here -WBR ordered and installed mine a few weeks ago. The best $23 I've spent on the Bird.

I got a JT 18 tooth from my local shop in a couple of days. What WAS your gearing when you were doing 2nd gear power wheelies? |

Thanks gentlemen. It occurs to me the small compromise in top end has become meaningless. I haven't topped the bike out in over a year. Here in the Houston area, the traffic density is such that it's high risk to go hyper speed almost anywhere.

What you're probably thinking of is when one goes down a tooth up front by using a 16T. This would give you more acceleration potential at the expense of a little top end speed. This is what most of us 2004-2006 Yamaha R1 owners have done: replace the stock 17T with a 16T. Starting with the new 2004 model, Yammy apparently though 170+ hp is a bit much for normal street riding, so they put a 17T counter-sprocket on the bike right from the factory (which made magazine reviewers believe the bike had "lost" torque from previous model years ). In fact, all previous model year R1s had a 16T, and fortunately, this 16T is a perfect fit to replace the factory 17T on the late-model R1s. Having replaced it with the previous-gen 16T, now my R1 accelerates like a bat outta hell, though I did lose a little bit on the top end.But since I don't spend a lot of time at 160+ mph on the street, it's no biggie, and I get to really turn-n-burn in the tight twisties.

FWIW, I had an 18T sprocket, and didn't like it. I felt 1st gear was too tall with it. I tried a 16T as well, and didn't like it as much as the 17T.......

Anyone else running a 16T up front? Just wondering if the drop from 17 to 16 is a good thing. Also what about going up a couple of teeth on the rear? |

| Re: Where to buy 18t sprocket On trackdays I've been running 16T, on the street I've been running stock 17T. My bird is a 99 with akro exhaust and PCII. A good test of state of tune has been slide back in the seat and roll on, the front will do a gentle lift about a foot up. It does require a cool day, 50s and cooler.

Still, I am going to experiment with the 18T because I am interested in lowering RPMs for some high-speed runs I have planned for next summer. The motivation here is simply one of saving fuel... I'd like to raise my fuel consumption up from the current 24 mpg when running at XX-Nominal speeds in Nevada.

I run a 16T front sprocket! I like is much better than the 17T.
