Michelin Pilot Road question about the B rating

so there's a B rated version of the Michelin PR rear tire that is described as being designed for loaded or 2up touring. I've bought this tire the last couple times but really wonder if I indeed need it. My dad runs PR2's on his ST1300 in size that does not even have a B rated option, and he does fine. I rarely ride 2up since we had our first child, but I do always have saddlebags on and occasionally a top case for touring, but I don't know what classifies as "loaded touring". I haven't really found much more info in my google searches about this topic. Do any of you tire guru's have any input on the matter? If i don't really need the B tire, I'd rather save my $30-40 and get the regular sidewall version.

    thanks!

I have used both the PR and PR2's on the bird. Never an issue. Same with the BT-023's. Never bothered with the extra rating on either.

    Aaron,
The (B) spec tire is for touring versions such as fitting for the FJR, ST1300. With less sidewall flex there is less heat buildup in the tire per say which should result in greater mileage from the tire. I am not sure what mileage your dad gets or you for that matter, but people that I know that have run the stnd PR2 got less ,ileage from the tire than those running the (B) spec. The real question is whether the additional cost of the (B) spec translates to more miles out of the tire.

Re: Michelin Pilot Road question about the B rating

The PR3s that are currently on my FJR1300 have over 14,000 miles and have a long way to go. They are not B spec. The last time that I had Pilot Road CT2s on the Blackbird, they were changed at 14,700 miles and they were not B spec either.

The only time that I used the heavier sidewall tire was a set of Pirelli Angel STs that I had on the FJR1300. I didn't think that they were anything special and certainly not worth paying anything extra for.

Got 29K out of my non b spec road 2ct and i ride double up with the misses and gear on regular occassions with no issue. The B spec has the stiffer wall for the heavier touring bikes.

Okay I know the PR's get crazy mileage, but you guys must ride like Pu$$/'s to get 18,000 MILES out of a rear tire. Not trying to be an a$$ but I would probably wear out rocks sooner

Why don't you just ride over to RedNexxt '12 in late April and prove to me that I ride like a Pu$$y, and you don't?
