Cherohala Ride 5-2-09

Left home at 5:00am, got to the end of 400 sooner than I expected, since there was absolutely NO traffic and arrived at the end of 400 at 6:15 and wondered is Smurf was going to be able to make it. I gassed up at the Shell and went across the road to the palatial Chevron parking lot to check my messages. As I feared, Smurf couldn't make it, as he stated earlier that he has worn himself out riding everyday for 10 days. I was disappointed for 2 seconds, re started the iPod, and ripped up SR60 thinking: No Worries!

I thought about writing one of my usual diatribes, but I am tuckered out after 427 miles in 12.3 hrs. Sorry Smurf, turned out to be a death march after all; good thing you didn't come, as we all know the Blackbird requires all of your attention to be ridden at a supra legal pace.

My route took me up SR60, into TN on SR68 for a few pics at the old copper mine, then into Tellico Plains-for breakfast. Got 182 miles in before scrambled eggs, bacon and toast with the saltiest butter I have ever tasted.

Have a look at these pics, more to come later...

It was about 50 degrees when I left, got up to 75F. Dry and still where I was riding, but on the way home, there was a lot of crosswind.

X1, give me more than 12 hrs notice for the next time and we'll make a go of it. I just ran out of gas. I really wanted to make that trip but the old bones said no way. Still want to see that copper mine you were telling me about. I'm planning on being off for while, have to go back into the prison farm (hospital) for some patch work but until then I'm riding as much as I can. // smurf

A few more pics, of high points on the Skyway, a sweeper, and the flying squirrel transfer posts. These were put up at MM 8 in NC so the little varmints can get across the road to mate. I kid you not.

Fatz Cafe in Franklin NC on Hwy441 is a great smoke free place a starving motorcyclist can get a good meal.

According to the people that were happy to spill information about them, they get used during the *season*!
