There are no bad roads down there, IMHO. US-129 is not that far and you can hook it into a nice out-and back and hit Robbinsville for lunch. Take the main drag, 71-North out of PF,..left turn onto 321/73 West/South, take it all the way (more then enough miles to get you warmed up for the day) to a left turn onto "Foothills Parkway" Take "Foothills" to the intersection of State Highway 115/U.S. 129 and make a left turn headed East and your on "The Dragon". Stop for photos at the turn out at the top of US-129 on your right( this is the turn around spot for those that make more then one pass on the Dragon). From the turn-out spot the road gets twistier as you head toward the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort. Stop at the Resort to collect yourself (get the tee-shirt and sticker)..turn around and run it back up to the turn-out spot...or continue on to Robbinsville for lunch. After lunch stay on 129 to Topton (heading southeast) at Topton turn North on 19/74 and take it all the way into Bryson City (your on the return leg here) and stick with 19 coming out of Bryson into Cherokee. Hit the 441 coming out of Cherokee heading to Gatlinburg (441/71) and your near enough home to Pigeon Forge. That's about a 4 hour run according to Google maps...but traffic will make the difference and can turn it into 5 hours or more. Weekends are not a good time to ride the Dragon. You may have already done a similar run out of Pigeon Forge i.e.The Tail of the Dragon,..but if you have not it's worth the effort just to say you have. Beware..the Dragon is (IMHO) a technical piece of road that is best taken at a leisurely pace the first time out...select lower gears...keep the rpm's up in the power band rather then lug the motor. While your bride sips coffee at the Motor Resort you can make another run up to the over look perhaps, and get a better feel for the road in solo fashion. I'd still caution you to take your time and enjoy the road first and foremost. Also, the LEO's have been out in force the last few years I hear tell,..obey the rules and play safe.
Another nice run would be to exit Robbinsville on 143/165 West to Tellico Plains via the Cherohala Skyway. You could run this clockwise or counter clockwise as you like. Again your into about 5 or 6 hours depending on traffic. The Cherohala is devoid of trucks which is nice. The road is beautiful...see the attached.
All the best to you both
