You can use photo edit software...often times this software comes with scanner and camera hardware packages....and use it to reduce the file sizes down to smaller numbers by way of resizing and file compression. If the intent of your photo work is aimed at web posting you can also (in most cases) set the camera to take pictures with smaller file sizes and smaller picture frame sizes straight off the bat. Doing this will help reduce the need to edit the pictures once down loaded from the camera memory. Many of my own web based pictures are shot with a older Sony Mavica 1.2 mega-pixel unit...picture quality is very good even at this lower res. and it helps to keep file sizes in check. Picture sizes are good if sized to 640 x 480 pixels if going on the web with them. There are free downloadable software's for photo editing I believe, but I've not had to partake in them as I've been using my old Cannon LiDE-30 scanner software for this task. Although the mind set is that "more mega-pixels is a better picture"...there is a down side to this technology (of a sort) were by file sizes go through the roof and storage space is quickly eaten up. Back in the day 1.2 megs was way large...now it's extremely small....but picture quality has not suffered at all IMHO.
