Bel Driver STI vs Bel STI-R

Hey guys, was just looking around for a GREAT radar detector, and it seems as though as far as distance for detecting, the Bel Driver STI's reviewed the best of the windshield-mount units. So I'm wondering now if I'd be much better off getting the STI-R (remote mount unit, for custom hardwire in) as far as it being a much better detector, or if I'm better off just going with the slightly cheaper (450 for STI driver, saw STI-R for $630 on ebay) and removable (for both security as well as putting it in my car, VR6 Jetta). My only experience prior to this detector is a very VERY cheap (like $35 from radioshack, from a friend for free) detector.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I have the 9500i which has been upgraded 9500xi. It's hard wired to bike,Techmount, but I switch between bike and car. It's a pain in the city as every auto door opener often sets it out. I lock out certain signals that I know aren't cops. I also mark certain areas that tax collectors like to hang out. I wouldn't ride without a radar detector under any circumstances. Especially when I ride in the USA. It has saved my wallet many times and has payed for itself many times over. They should be an optional extra on the new Bird. i.m. humble o. Just like you Amex, don't leave home without it. Those are two excellent sites, thank you,

my cop buddy informed me that they are (i don't know if he meant the whole US or just our state) transforming into a new type of radar that won't be detected with any radar detector out today.... just don't want you to waste your money quite yet....
i figure the only thing a radar detector is good for anymore is to give you a heads up that your going to get pulled over

Re: Bel Driver STI vs Bel STI-R

I have the Escort 8500 X50 and screamer which is a pretty good detector. In NZ, most police detection is microwave radar (Ka) band fitted to highway patrol vehicles. Most cops leave their radars on all the time so they're easy to pick up with plenty of time. Even with instant-on, cops are giving traffic well up the road a ping so most times, you still get a warning. Unmarked camera vans by the side of the road are also a hazard but they can be picked up by the same method. I haven't got a laser jammer (wife won't let me ) but laser use by the cops is a lot less frequent so I don't mind taking the risk.

I've seen tests where the latest Bel range and the Escort 9500 are all better than my X50 but having said that, it's saved my bacon plenty of times.

true that... but be honest... when is the most likely you will be speeding... A. with a little traffic. B. A lot of traffic. or C. NO traffic?
C. would be the most vulnerable to getting pulled over...

Hahaha - absolutely correct! Part of the trick is choosing a time and place to speed. Most of my riding is done on a twisty 300 km loop with a low population density and not many cops. I'm a good boy (well fairly) on major highways

Re: Bel Driver STI vs Bel STI-R

Dont laugh, but i asked a friend of mine about a radar detector, this is what he said" Get a fish finder... its sonar. It will scramble the radar signal. A friend of his, who is a cop tested it out and said it was true."

A fish finder- sonar.

What do you guys think?

What effect are sound waves supposed to have on radio waves? I have to think htat would be as effective as turning your high beam on to slow down.
