Cortech Saddle bags added to Tail Bag

First of all when researching this I was amazed at how little information was available from Cortech or anyone else on how these bags interact with each other. I needed some extra space and didn't want to spring for the billion dollar beetle bags so at $117 at New Enough Hard Parts I decided to give it a go. I wanted to be able to detach my tail bag separately from my saddlebags and very easily figured out how to. I also stumbled upon how easy it was to remove the whole rig when I forgot to photo the forward straps. They have some reflective material on the bottom that doubles as a reinforced layer. There's a couple of extra pads that I didn't use for the cross straps that go over the seat. The instructions (and I use that term loosely) wanted you to slide part of the tail bag underneath the straps. I chose not to do that as I felt the system was secure enough without doing so. I mounted the side bags with the front straps as shown in the pictures and the rear straps under the tail. I then mounted the tail bag as I normally would with the bungee cords but also buckled them into the side bags. As a unit it is pretty secure and removal of the tail bag is quick as is removal of the whole system. For the money it'll do for now. Now the next time someone does a search on this they'll be able to see if these fit with their system, hopefully. // sm

Get something on the painted sides of your tail. The bags will, ruin your paint. It will take a while....but it will happen. Straps/bungee's especialy.

Clear stick on plastic protector.....toolbox drawer liner...

The clear plastic that you cover books with in the area's that the straps are will protect the paint as lois says is required. and its cheap and completely removable..

That's exactly the rigging I'm going to go with, with the addition of a midsize tank bag.

Thanks for the pics, I was wondering how/where they'd ride on the bird as far as height and fore-aft position.

It'll also give me a good excuse to keep passengers off

Too many jpegs, I got lost. lol. Well done, however, plus one on scratching the shite out of your Bird. I'm wondering how they will behave in a Mother of a windy rain storm which we all encounter when touring. Are there liners? How h20 proof will they be, in truth. Oh, frame plugs from Jaws. Keep us posted after a long overnight blast. I hope they work well for you.

They come with rain covers. I'm thinking if I'm loaded up I'll stay under 130 . thanks for the tip on the frame stuff. For the price they're sufficient. Jury is still out on how they ride and how secure they will be. I have a sense for a quick jaunt for a cup of coffee here in a few minutes !!!! . // sm

Re: Cortech Saddle bags added to Tail Bag

Update, well the QT up the road, about 50 miles up the road, has Starbucks energy drinks in 24 oz. cans. Oh boy. the bags worked great. Got into a discussion while taking my break with a gent that has the exact same setup. The cool thing is that they are a breeze to take on and off. Normally I just scoot around with my tank bag and tail bag. These are just for the longer and possible overnight jaunts. Oh, and the jpegs. Do a search on Cortech sport saddle bags and see how little info there is on the darn things, until now, your welcome Cortech, I'll be expecting my check any day now . Imagine how many more of these units Cortech could sell if they had just a little more information on fitment. It amazes me.

Yeah, your post put my thinkering about them from leaning toward them to pulling the trigger.

That's their "sportbike" tail pack, yes?

I've traveled many miles with almost that exact setup. I had a different tailbag. I can assure you, the setup is secure up to at least 130.

Re: Cortech Saddle bags added to Tail Bag

Ok, question for you Smurf: What did you attach the rear sidebag anchors to? The closest things that I see are the turn signal stems - and I'm not thrilled about anchoring anything to those.

I chose to loop the front anchors through the passenger peg mounts so that I (don't forget to remove them and have them flopping against the paint, sans bags) can take them off more easily than removing the seat. They also pull tension downward on the bags a bit more on the front, not just inward.

Also, I very much like the buckle-in system for the tail bag to the side bags, but I like the side bags to ride lower than the tailbag straps allow (even at full extension - the "instructions" say to set them as high as possible, I disagree with this). So I'll be doing a bungee attachment for it, with the sidebag main supports through its bottom cushion.

Re: Cortech Saddle bags added to Tail Bag

I run my saddlebag attachments to the front under the seat and run the rear portion under that tail. I attach the tail bag with the couplers and then bungee the whole thing down. This way I can remove the tail bag as a unit and take it with me. I store trip stuff in the saddlebags and high pri stuff in the tail bag. Tank bag has all my electronics in it. It is a little different from the recommended approach but it seems to work well. I don't like getting near the turn signals mounts either, too flimsy. HTH. // sm

Re: Cortech Saddle bags added to Tail Bag

I've been using the Cortec system on two bikes since 2006. First time out was there standard three bag set up on a 1983 CB-1100F pictured below. Worked extremely well for a quick "on the bike off the bike" system. There is/was some movement in them given the way they attach to the bike (or more correctly, they way I attached them to the bike), but no fear of them departing during normal riding. Pictured below during "Lobster Tour-07". As a means to force myself to pack lighter/smarter my Blackbird sports the Hondaline hardbags (saddle bags) with a Cortec Sport Tailbag pulling duty as a easy access trunk. No pictures of this install I'm afraid. Steve, as others have mentioned,..place some anti-abrasive protection at the points of contact where bugee meets body work. I've used something as simple as duc tape (two 2x2 squares of it) to protect the lower front sides of my tail cowl. The Sport Bags front bungee's cross the cowl on there way to the passenger pegs attachment points I use. I simple peel it off when not required for normal bike use without the bag.

Steve,
Have a great ride Sunday. It's back to the oil factory for me come Sunday morning. And a word of warning (most likely not required) beware the "dry county"! You'll find that a 1.14 liter bottle of Capt. Morgan Spiced Rum fits rather nicely across the width of the Cortec Sport Tail Bag....if the need should arise. I found this out at the duty free store in Buffalo, NY last Tuesday. The expansion feature is also nice when your trying to haul some of that duty free perfume for your wife,....or girl friend....or both!

Welcome back, T. I forgot to mention that I found some cable cover from a stereo install. It has ribs but I just found some smooth type fresh in the bag which I have yet to put on but at least I'm making headway in protecting my paint. Thanks to you and "L" for the heads up. -Steve

Re: Cortech Saddle bags added to Tail Bag

I run the same set up. I attach the front straps of the saddle bags to the passenger peg hangers and run the rear SB straps under the tail light. I leave the velcro on top of the seat and then just clip the tailbag onto the SB's without the use of the bungee's. Works great even at triple digits. I have definately put this set up to the test. The TB comes off with no drama, just the four buckles.

Indeed, but I think our passenger pegs are farther forward. I tie my front straps to them; I don't think the straps are long enough to reach from the back.

Agreed, it's not an XX but I thought it was interesting in that even if that option were possible I probably wouldn't utilize it. I would think things may have a tendency to get tangled up in the straps. I route mine under the seat. I guess it's UTTI to decide. I just seldom see anything about how to mount these and I thought it interesting. Just passing it along. r/ sm

Smurf could you tell me what you attached the rear straps to under the tail? I read you and someone else have done this but I don't see anything to hook it to. And your pics only show it coming out from under the tail. Maybe I need to get all the way down on the ground at look up. Thank you

What a handle , I just connect them together joining the two straps underneath and tighten them up. Most of the mounting connectivity is placing the tail bag on top and connecting them all together. I have yet to go anywhere with just the saddlebags. I usually go as a set. I'll take a pic and post it to try and help, probably tomorrow if you need it.

Thanks for the info Smurf. I thought about hooking them together after I went to bed and was thinking about it. I have them now hooked on the blinkers, but will change the straps before I head out. On my way to a Rally with a bunch of guys, take a look. Thanks again. Wharf Rat Rally: September 2nd - 7th, 09

Yeah, I hooked mine to each other under/behind the tail, keep them away from those turn signal stems! You'll have them flopping at the first big bump.
