I'm just getting back into riding after a 4 year hiatus and I have an Arai Quantum e that I bought new as a left over in 2002. I only wore it for one 7,000 mile season but I absolutely loved that helmet.
My question is: Has helmet technology come that far in the last 5 to 6 years that I should consider something newer. I did 30 miles on my new XX two weekends ago when the weather broke here in Massachusetts and I still felt like the Arai worked/fit great.

I recently got myself a Suomy Vandal.
It fitted my bonce best ( I had my eye on a Shark RSI but it didn't feel as comfy).
The vandal is a little louder at speed than my old suomy, but it's a damn sight lighter.
Very pleased.
Ragtag.
(sorry about the piccy quality, it was taken with a camera phone)

Trying a Shark RSi this year. Couple of rides and so far it's okay. The shield change is ridiculously easy/fast. Not sure about the venting yet.
Had an HJC CL-11 (?) previously. Decent enough helmet but the wind noise is crazy.
Edit: Been riding with the Shark RSi for about a month now. It's a decent enough helmet. But I've noticed a fair amount of wind noise, and oddly enough it comes in through the bottom of the helmet in the neck area behind the ears. If the padding was thicker it'd be a super-quiet helmet. Very odd they'd design the foam like that. Not sure if it's done on purpose or what.

Fulmer. Only problem is most places don't carry parts or shields for the full face Fulmer.

I have a Scorpion! LOVE IT!!! I've had several different helmets from a Shoei to HJC, and I tell you what I believe the Scorpions were made for women (Sorry to the men that are wearing them)! I love my scorpian. The ventilation is awesome, never fogs up, tight but not suffocatingly tight, and its extremely quiet (makes using the chatterboxes a whole lot easier) ! You know what the best part about it is, they are cheap, but definitely not cheaply made! 6000 miles and going strong! Will be getting another helmet in the spring and it will definitely be a SCORPION!

I have a Vega Altura. They're light and inexpensive, DOT certified, but not Snell certified. It's mostly yellow, like my Icon jackets, because I want to be visible! I loved the fit and look of the orange Shoei RF-1000 Picotte 3, but I didn't want to spend the approximately $470. My girlfriend liked the fit of the Shoei also, but she also didn't want to spend that much, so she got a yellow HJC AC-12 Axis.
I really like the Akuma Werewolf helmet, with its great graphics and LED's in the rear vents, but it also isn't Snell certified. If it was, I'd already have bought it. I'd like to get a Snell certified helmet, I just don't know yet which one it'll be. I'm still looking.

Started out with a Fulmer D2 helmet. Liked it for a while and an ok helmet for the price. Started having problems with the way the visor attached to the side of the helmet and the tabs kept breakin off the visor. I think I'm on my 4th visor in a year. Also, the vent tab for the vent in front of the mouth is a major POS and broke almost right after I bought it.
I just recently purchased a Scorpion EXO 700 and can't say enough good things about it. The only thing I'd complain about is the fact that the first notch opens the lid too far. Sometimes I'd like to just crack it open a 1/4 of an inch to get a little more airflow, but I have to open it to an inch and a half. Oh well, it's still a great helmet other than that. I'm just waiting on an auto-tinting visor for the helmets now |

I had signet Arai helmets for years and have switched to Scorpion. This helmet has an optional monochromatic shield that goes from clear at night to dark in the summer sun here in Miami. Great venting system, cool, nice graphics, and the best tinted shield available. Inside is fully removable and washable. Drys in minutes. Fraction of the cost of a new Arai and in my opinion a better fit / finish helmet. I have the Scorpion EXO-700 "Crack head". Great helmet, DOT & Snell approved.

I'm sure it's a little late in the thread but Comp Acc has certain Shoei RF 1000 and TZ-R models on closeout. Personally I have a TZ-R and think it is a fantastic lid, coming from an AGV that was way heavier and way louder. Competition Accessories: Helmets: Street Helmets: Full Face

I'm with you Lumpy, the X-Spirit is a fantastic lid, but I remember meeting John from Florida at the bash and his lid was the same but not called an X-Spirit |
