winter riding clothes

Looking for good riding clothes to keep me warm while riding the season change is killing me weather is great when i leave home but boy by time i come home later at night i am freezing i take a sweat shirt but after a while it's not good enough i am looking for something that is light to carry and does the job keeping me warm. Something to slip on over clothes would be the ultimate buy. any suggestions would be great

Re: winter riding clothes

I'm still building my winter repertoire. I live in Minnesot-ah, and it gets plenty chilly.

I commute 120 miles round trip, all highway every day. I wear leather and textile pants (textile only in the crotch really) and a Hein Gericke leather jacket. It does come with a zip in vest, but instead I just wear a long sleeve T and a fleece because on the ride home I can stuff them in my tank bag. I have a pair of regular leather gloves and a heavy winter pair, which I swap out and stuff in the bag for the ride home.
My latest purchase is a neoprene and fleeze balaclava. It breaks the wind really well and keeps my head and neck pretty toasty. It has a perforated section that covers the mouth and then goes up over the nose. I'm still getting used to that, because it moves down and with winter gloves on, it's hard to adjust on the fly.
I'd like to get the taller Zero Gravity ST screen to help with the wind a bit.

Hope that helps. When I'm rich, I'd like to install some grip warmers and some other fun bits. Right now I'm paying off speeding tickets. Sweet sorrow.

Re: winter riding clothes

I bought an Aerostich fleece jacket, the black style.... that thing is freakin' awesome. It blocks the wind very well and provides a surprising amount of insulation, and packs pretty small. They're not cheap, but it's good stuff. I even added thier fleece pants to my arsenal. Happy shopping.

The Aerostich fleece looks like an affordable option, especially when looking at electric liners, etc.

P.S. I guess the point is, if you can't afford the really good stuff, go for layers.

If there's hot coffee at the end, a cold ride is better than no ride right?

Re: winter riding clothes

my pants were $97 not sure where the $297 came from. Do you already have decent protective "shell" gear, or do you just wear T-shirt + sweatshirt or whatever? The fleece is obviously meant as a layer, I use it under my mesh cortech jacket and it's good down to the high 40's or so.

Re: winter riding clothes

haha, well sounds like you've pinpointed the problem It can be quite handy to have a selection of jackets for seasonal changes. I have a BMG Challenger 3/4 length jacket that's awesome for anything 70ish and below, above that I use the mesh... use the 'stich fleece interchangeably between the two as the liner when needed. I use First Gear HT Air 2.0 pants, they're also a great product with year-round ability. It get's pricey to have the right gear, but over the years of riding eventually you get to where you finally have a good selection of gear to use. Good gear is just priceless too, I can't remember how many times I've literally felt horrible for other riders on trips I've been on because of how cold or wet they were Hope you're able to find some good gear!

Look at a good textile/leather jacket with a removable liner and air vents. Joe Rocket and ICON have some good selections.

Joe Rocket.....there's nothing wrong with Joe R.

This is what I use for cold weather riding, and if any of you southern types want to play a little " how cold is cold game" I'm in.

Coat - Joe Rocket , Meteor 4.0

Liner - Joe Rocket , Dry Tek liner

Pants - Joe Rocket ,Speedmaster textile.

When warm, wear JR meteor 4.0

When colder, add JR dry tek liner

If to hot, don't wear pants, just keep in tank bag or back pack.

Also, I always have a long sleeve shirt and " light" long john's.

Another trick I use, is I wear a Ski Doo brand helmet in the late fall and early spring. (will not fog up)...this helmet is not necessary, but it looks really really cool.

I have left home at 18:00 (06:00pm) and rode to work in 65F temps, and come home 12 hours later ,with the temp being 30F. Like tonight.

You don't need fancy, smancy gear, just good quality stuff, and make sure that it is easy to quickly layer. Plus you WILL need either a tank bag ,or back pack to store extra gear when it's warm.

Re: winter riding clothes

I commuted all winter long last year for the first time ever. I pieced my riding outfit together one piece at a time Johnny Cash style. I bought a used Olympia AST coat on ebay, A used Gerbings jacket liner on ebay, used BMW Santiago waterproof insulated touring boots on ebay, and bought new Gerbings socks, Gerbings dual zone temp controller, Gerbings Classic gloves and new Olympia Ranger 2 overpants.

I bought the pants new because after weeks of hunting, my size never came up used. I bought new socks for obvious reasons, and used temp. controllers and gloves were going for new prices.

I put the whole outfit together for about 40% of what new would have cost and rode over 5,000 miles in the cold. One morning it was 19 degrees F before the 70 mph windchill of riding. I was warm the whole time.

There is another site I get on called Adventure Rider Motorcycle Forum and they have a great thread of used gear. There's a bunch of great motorcycle addicts over there just like here.

If I wouldn't have bought used, I would have frozen, because I couldn't afford all of it at one time new.

Re: winter riding clothes

I have been known to ride when temps are in the single digit...2:30 am getting off work and my combination works for me. Long johns-long sleeve t-shirt-sweat shirt and a windbreaker...windbreaker needs drawstrings and everything needs to fit snug. Ski mask under helmet that tucks under t-shirt.
custom wound heated grips..must get way hot. Leather work gloves with a pair of worn out gauntlets with the palms cut out for max heat transfer from grips.Usualy just a pair of levis but for longer distance than 30 miles rain pants work. The main thing is no air leaks..a little draft at 30 mph is danger at 80 and the grips i make get so hot you might burn your bare hand.
As far as i am concerned the hot grips makes it all work..it is the only real source of heat that makes any difference when the wind chill gets in the minus 50s...the only thing that i haven't really found a fix for is helmet fog.
other than flippin up the visor to equalize the temp i havent had much luck.
I live in salt lake city...7 years ridding year round...snow rain ice fog..i ride i don't like leather...it gets cold and tranfers the cold....haven't tried any heated gloves yet..maybe this year..main thing is warm hands.... anything less than 100%function is unacceptable...as for myheated grips? $5 and an hour or two labor and you set them up as hot as you need.

Re: winter riding clothes

I'm considering the gerbing heated stuff. $199 for the jacket. Gloves I think are 149. YOu have to add some cost for the hook ups and thermostat. A buddy of mine at work has this stuff for years. Seems to work and hold up well.

Re: winter riding clothes

I found out in Arkansas that my G3 gloves drain the battery if I'm not careful. I know the 97's had wimpy stators but I didn't think they were THAT bad... until now It was cold enough where I pretty much had them at least on low the whole day and I tend to ride at relatively low RPM's so I guess I wasn't creating enough juice to power the gloves and juice the battery. After a fuel stop towards the end of the day I had to pop-start it, but I finished the day in higher RPM's with the gloves turned off and haven't had a problem since.

lesson learned... ride in a little higher RPM's and turn off the gloves 5-10 miles before a stop to juice up the battery a little before shutting off the motor.

Check out motosport.com. they have a good heated combo deal going. You get Tourmaster gloves, jacket, and pants for around 400 bucks

Re: winter riding clothes

Does anyone know how the tourmaster heated gear compares to the Gerbing?
I've been considering getting some heated gear. One of the guys that works for me has the gerbing and he likes it. It looks real similar to this tourmaster stuff. The Gerbing stuff seems more expensive.

Re: winter riding clothes

I think Gerbing is the best choice however it's expensive. Check their web site. I think they are in and around the Seattle area. I don't ride like you lads do in the cold, cold, weather. I'm too much of a "pussy" so heated grips will be good enough. Damn, it's a never ending list for the bike and the rider. Actually I want a heated jacket for my wife for those cool mountain rides.

Has anybody tried the Icon Insulated Jeans? They look pretty good and also provide protection in the hip and knee area with stitched in Kevlar.

The insulation is removable and washable as well....

I haven't tried those pants. They look functional from the description but they also look like something that my son would wear with that whole logo writing thing down the side of the pants.
