Garmin C550 GPS mounted on XX

Hi all,
Recently I bought a Garmin C550 from Amazon.com for $170 delivered. I also ordered the Ram-mount brake/clutch mount/arm/plate and a Garmin C550 cradle. While I'm sure the Zumo 550 is a great GPS but at almost 4 times the cost of the C550, I decided to see how long the c550 will last on my CBR-1100XX. If it doesn't work out, I will replace it.

After receiving everything, found that the cradle was made in plastic with a small plastic ball that goes into the back of the gps only by friction mount (push on/pull off type.) and that sure didn't seem to be able to stand the vibration of the bike. So I bought a strip of 1" x 1/8" thick aluminum strip and made a bracket to hold it securily. Here are some pics.

Oh, the string is to tether my magnetic tank bag so it won't fly off accidently.

Navigo, the original software is crap, but once you hack the device you can put pretty much anything on it.

Nice! The Ram looks pretty decent. Does it vibrate much?

Gah! I can't see any of these images! And I Am really curious about this! I have a TomTom One 130 I want to mount on my 'Bird, and am trying to find the best, cleanest way to do it. I'm not going to wire it or anything, I just want to be able to mount it....

Re: Garmin C550 GPS mounted on XX

Last Friday at the London Ont. bike show at the Agriplex I bought all the RAM Mount hardware to do this install (see link) to my XX. The GPS is a Garmin nuvi 260W. It will be wired to the battery via a weather proof aux power port (cig lighter on a cord). Canadian Tire carry two types of these power ports in the auto section ($19.00 and $14.00 each depending on style).

No..that was my poor attempt at a description of the unit. The actual Canadian Tire parts are listed as "Pickup Truck Box Power Port" or something like that. That said..they stock these right next to the replacement cig lighter parts!

It's states that it is weather proof and it includes the little spring loaded trap door to help keep the weather out of the port when not in use. One includes 10ft of wire to do your connection with,..I'm not sure if it's fused..but it may be. It accepts your standard cig lighter adapter plugs that most car GPS/IPOD/MP3/Gadgets use for power supplies. I've just found this unit today,..after purchasing a cheap ($6.00) set from Princess Auto that is not weather proof, so it's going back in the a.m.

I think I mentioned a similar device for sale on-line in America..but this one is the same money and closer to home so it' will be put into service,..unless something better comes along for the same money. I've also seen multi port units of two and three port versions...not sure if there weather proof or not, as I wasn't in the market for one.

oh wow, all i did was use (hell i dunno what they call it) little wire tappers that have a second plug in adapter so if you want to remove it, the tap stays in place but you can take off whatever it is you plugged into the aux cord... right now i have 2 LED strips, my givi stop light, and my GPS unit attatched to this aux cord

Re: Garmin C550 GPS mounted on XX

The things...at least with the GPS, there Garmin plug is also the power let down unit that, at least that's what I believe...so it needs to be inline with the power feed. Rather then butcher the Garmin cord and possible screw up the let down circuits I'll just wire in the aux port and plug the Garmin into that and be done with it. I guess you could run a heated vest or gloves off it to if you were so inclined. Still working out the details here but it is slowly coming together.

well my garmen was meant for the motorcycle so the cord actually came as 2 stripped wires with a fuse built in... plus it has a lot more nifty anti theft devices to keep slick fingers out

One place to see some different mounting styles for different bikes is the RAM Mount USA site:

RAM Mounting Systems, Inc. > Support Center > Picture Gallery & Reviews

Some of the XX owners are doing a somewhat custom install by passing a threaded rod through the steering stem which teminates with a RAM 1" ball at the top of the upper triple clamp. There are pictures of just such an install at the link above.

Man, looking at you guy's mounts, my setup is positively prehistoric lol

I ran a twin lead off of the battery, terminating with a capped Weatherhead connector at the front end of the tank. It will mate to a hacked triple outlet power port which will be inside my Joe Rocket Hammerhead tank bag. My Tomtom OneXL GPS will be in the top pocket of the bag secured in place by velcro, my phone (with a GPS tracking and Google Maps overlay application) will be in the other pocket, and the third outlet is for the forward video camera, if necessary. My plan is that when I get off the bike, rather than worrying about bolting the GPS and such down on the bike, I can simply unplug the single Weatherhead connector, pop the camera in the tank bag, and throw the bag over my shoulder for walking around.

Re: Garmin C550 GPS mounted on XX

I think I may have mentioned this on another thread but.... Finally purchased the needed power supply cord with can be hardwared to the bike.

http://thegpsstore.com/Gilsson-GUSB5...1718C318.aspxe

The link may or may not work, but the cord is made by Gilsson and the part # is GUSB5VB. The cord is approx 8ft in length and includes the two stripped wire ends at the battery connection end and a 90degree mini usd plug at the GPS end. About at the mid point is the volta reduce device.

This unit includes the voltage let down as needed for the Garmin I'm using. I just need to get all the bits together and make the install now. Spring maintenance thrash on the bike is about to start so it will happen soon.

Tony

Whatever works, man, that was the only goal... :-)
I wired a 12V cigarette adapter that I got from Walmart to the battery and let it hang down the side of the seat. I just plug in my GPS to it.

Nice, i like that, but hows did you take care of the vibration?
(i know the bird is minimal, but the road bumps and such to ensure it doesn't jump out?)

No jump out,the trick is to insert a long part inside the hole (not in the sexual concept)

Yup. Bigger and easier to see, too. Some of them will bluetooth the audio to the helmet (working on figuring out how to pair mine now).
