I was thinking about a modular helmet - any thoughts on this one?:

NO WAY! NO HOW! A modular helmet is only DOT approved, not SNELL approved. For motorcycle use and the speeds that you are capable of reaching you want to use a helmet that is SNELL approved. Therefore in the event of an accident you will have the best chance of preventing head injuries. Surely your brains are worth more than $75.

Thanks. I got an AGV helmet with the Bird and while it is nice, a modular one would be even better...had no idea of what to look for, etc. thus my post. But I skeptical based on the price, and I usually hit triple digits every time I take her out.

Dont buy modular or cheap helmets. Its like putting cheap crap oil in the engine. I have a Shoei helmet and would not recommend any other brand. Yes they are expensive but you get what you pay for and this is very much the case with helmets. Dont scrimp on a helmet mate. You only have one head and it needs looking after. Pay a bit more and know that you have some good protection.

As long as it's DOT and SNELL approved and is comfortable.

Results : SHARP - The Helmet Safety Scheme

this sort of disprooves your "get what ya pay for" theory Bordo me thinks

as can be seen some of the cheapest helmets outperform the likes of arai and shoei in this new test

If you want to go modular, I would only consider two, Caberg or Shoeberg ( BMW's Shoei)
I have the Caberg, and love it. Has flip down sunglasses inside the visor, so no sore ears from sunglasses. Only drawback to any modular is the DOT/Snell thing and more wind noise. However, a good set of in ear earphones fixes this and ads the pleasure of whatever music you like.

Just did 6000 mile trip in 9 days, and the modular was a nice to have feature.

I feel safer in a full face helmet. So I'd shy away from a modular.

The only Modular helmet that I own is a " ski-Doo" modle that I use in last fall and early spring.
The reason I ride with one at all, is the fact that the model I use has a fighter pilot stlye of face mask that is worn inside the helmet.

This thing will not fog up. So I would rather be able to see, than not see.

but once the weather warms up, it's bye bye to the modular for one of my full faces.

Side note however. One of my buddies went down on Route 66 last March in an HJC Symax- modular. I must admit, he had a little problem with target fixation on a small rock I called out and rode around the rock.....and off the road. He went down around the 30 MPH mark and must have made an easy 20 revolutions. He was ok, really shook up and all, but his Modular held together very well for the beating it took. Still no full face, but I think for touring purposes, a good grade modular ( stressing good) will more than foot the bill. But like I said earlier, for any type of performance riding, or just added peace of mind, a goof quality full face is the way to go.

I bought an Icon Mainframe Skull helmet as a beater/combat helmet, and have found that even though it is the cheapest of all my lids, it is the one that I now use the most.....you should check it out.

I brought the latest Nolan 103 fliptop helmet with basic kit and bluetooth..
Not cheap at all and I hate the bleeding thing,,$600 worth of helmet just sits in the draw and I are back to using the HJC full face for all my riding.
No point in the communication kit,the bloody wind noise see`s to that.just have to wear ear plugs and suffer.IMO
