Radar Detector

Hi! My name is Crystal and I speed.

OMG, I can't go to the grocery store without speeding. I don't want another ticket, just doesn't look good with my job.

I am thinking of getting this, anyone have any experience with it?

I am open to ideas, suggestions and or opinions.

Re: Radar Detector

Hey Crystal, Glen from BC here. You speed? Well that's just wrong. (evil snickering)
Not sure how one maintains posted limits on a Bird. There was nothing on this type of behaviour in the owners manual. A mystery indeed.
Seriously now, that's a nice piece of equipment. Seems to have all the right gizmos. How can you tell I'm not a electric gizmo guy.
No real useful feedback or advice here, just pure emptyheaded male consumer impulse. BUY IT.
Sounds like it will earn it's keep in no time.
Hope that helps.
Glen.

Re: Radar Detector

These farkles are spendy, no doubt. I've had one s-ticket in the last 7 years so I'm lucky. Rode Van to Toronto, no tickets. Locally I know where most of the radar hangs out but there's no guarantee. I wish a GPS would include radar also. My next add on will be a radar detector I'm just choking on spending $5-600 buck on a farkle such as that not to mention the cost of GPS. Buy it and keep us posted on the install and functionality.

Re: Radar Detector

Hi! My name is Bruce and I speed. I buzzed the el presidente's tower yesterday (unknowningly ) while she was driving her minivan. So far just the silent treatment, but this is gonna get ugly.

If i'm not mistaken, Passport and Beltronics are the same company now and the technology is virually identical with some differences in packaging. Both are top of the pack contenders.

I'm a huge believer in audio alert, the only sure way of getting instantaneous notification that your 'speeding' rights are about to be violated. My final choices were the 8500 or RX65 both with integrated audio (3.5mm) output and voltage display (can set as main display and overriden when trouble brewing). 8500 works great, just make sure they don't get wet.

Suggestion #1

Don't get caught with it or a speeding ticket will look REALLY nice to you after you see the ticket for the detector

I would pay $400 for it, when ones that are half the price work just as well.

Re: Radar Detector

They are illegal in Nova Scotia, so am wondering are they really completely stealth? Is that possible? Or do they just jam the system??

Re: Radar Detector

Beltronics is a good brand, they have been around for years, you could certainly do worse. I think $449 is a bit steep for something so easily stolen.

I've been looking at detectors too for my XX. I don't like the idea of having to remove it all the time, so I have been looking at the remote type. There doesn't seem to be many motorcycle specific detectors on the market. But one that seems to get pretty good reviews is the Whistler Crusader. They can be had for about $230 and can possibly be mounted in the fairing or in a standard gauge housing. So I'm sure with some creative cutting I could find a suitable place to mount the display. It has a external LED so you can run it up more into your line of sight, and there is an available helment mounted LED. PLUS is shows temp and voltage.

Here is a link for some reviews and motorcycle specific info

Re: Radar Detector

You also need the Blinder M-20 Laser Jammer.

I here good things on the Valentine One and the Escort Passport 8500.

I need to buy both the jammer and RADAR detector.

Re: Radar Detector

I have the R65 and the M-20 and haven't had a ticket since.

Here in Broward county traffic tickets are a joke ! They are handed out quickly and easily but you do not go in front of a judge for resolution. Instead you go in front of a Magistrate or better known as a local Lawyer acting on behalf of a judge. If another lawyer handles your ticket for you then you get No Points, No Driving School and No Conviction. Within one week of receiveing any traffic citation here , your mailbox gets flooded with ad's for lawyers that want to handle your case at a fee ranging from $50.00 to $99.00. Most of the Ad's say "Don't Pay That Ticket, We gaurantee No Points, No School and No Conviction or Your Money Back"
Only those that do not know better get convicted of traffic citations in this county.

I have been issued over 15 tickets in the past 2 years and I have no convictions and still have my Florida "Safe Driver" stamp on my license and enjoy the reduced insurance cost for it.

No twisties here but no valid convictions either.

Keep the rubber side down!!

Re: Radar Detector

Crystal,
The STi is one of the top three rated radar detectors... The others are the Valentine One and the Passport 8500 X50. You Canadians might consider stealth mounting with a H.A.R.D. system that can be concealed in the helmet easily. I don't much worry about Laser since you're busted as soon as the unit detects it...

To add, I believe the H.A.R.D. system is only available for the 8500 and V1. I use it for my 8500 and love it!

Re: Radar Detector

If you're in Nova Scotia and they are illegal I think you're just asking for double trouble. Radar detectors emit energy signal even when powered down that your LEO's can pick up and even if your not speeding you're hosed.

I heard that if you keep an addressed and stamped envelope in your ride and you get popped. Just quickly (while you're sucking down that beer, and putting on your seatbelt) put the detector in the envelope and seal it. Then it takes a warrant to get the envelope or open it. Obviously a trick for the car. Could be urban myth.

I ran one accross the Yukon (also illegal) but never saw a cop.

That is the reason I was recommended it.

Still thinking hard on this one, I just plain hate to pay out when I can avoid it and since slowing down isn't an option.............

Re: Radar Detector

Take a look at radarbusters.com. They sell a variety of radar detectors and other accessories. Mainly look under their product support pull-down. In there you will find lots of great tests and recommendations.

I have an 8500 X50 with the HARD system. The detector is hardwired into my blackbird. The main disadvantage of the HARD system is that I can forget to turn it off and the batteries die.

When did detectors become legal in B.C.? I always leave mine at home when I travel through there. They have been legal here in Alberta for about 10 or 12 years now.

Re: Radar Detector

Do any of you have pics of a mounted detector? I have no idea where to stuff my X50 (blue - the fastest color) on my 97 bird. Also, the H.A.R.D. system looks cool buckets.

I've never know radar devices to be illegal in BC. They're sold at Future shop, etc. The cops use them, why can't I?

Re: Radar Detector

I just came back from Barber racetrack in Birmingham with 3 other friends on bikes. Both myself and my friend who owns a 'Gixxer 750 have the same setup on our bikes, purchased from Radar detectors and jammers reviewed by retired cop
Setup: Beltronics RX 65 with H.A.R.D/helmet combo (see ' motorcycle" section at radarbusters.com). Power supply is run off the fusebox, radars are mounted on standard gps type mounts with velcro. This allows them to be removed at will...
I have nothing but good things to say about the setup, tons of warning, never a ticket in the last 2 years, and I ride fast, believe me...the joke amongst us (my other 2 friends with Hayabusas also have the same radar setup) is that every sportbike should have this automatically built in at purchase!
One thing worth noting: If you buy the components at radarbusters.com and one of them fails (transmitter on bike in my case), they want you to buy both parts again as a package ($160). No need for that, simply go to Legal Speeding - radars, radar mounts, windscreen mounts, HARD, wireless electronics for the speed enthusiasts and buy what you need individually.
Hope all this helps!
Happy speeding,
Rasraves

I have a relative living in alberta, I think I will give her a call, see if she find the particular model I am looking for and a price it out for me.
If I buy one from the states, I have to have it shipped to a province which it is not illegal, then have it shipped to me.

Re: Radar Detector

I just bought a 99 xx and I have a couple questions.

1) There is no reason for the HARD system if I install an Autocom system, and the detector wired through that, correct?

2) Is there any other place to mount the detector on a 99 so that it is hidden?

Thanks,

Tom

Are you talking about my statements on the Laser??? If so, read up on how the Po-po use it. Yes there is a chance that IF you're far enough away from the source that you pickup some of diffused beam (when aimed at another target), you'll be able to slow down and avoid the ticket. But, The cops aim at surfaces that are flat/smooth (like license plates) that will give them a good target and they usually Laser at a much shorter distance than Radar because the Laser requires more accuracy (ie. better aim).
I consider Laser a crap shoot... With Radar, the decetor gives me a fighting chance. At least, that's the way I see it.

As far as the H.A.R.D. system, it's best to buy the batteries for the receiver in bulk... You'll go through them the way I go through a bag of M&M's!

Lot's of people use their Autocomm and other systems to route the detector's signal... I like the H.A.R.D. better, The LED really gets your attention!

Re: Radar Detector

On the above web site/re detectors, there is a product that you paint on you headlights that confuses radar. Has anyone used such a product on car/truck/or bike? I know now that the next farkle will be a detector which I'll get in Alberta in July. No sales tax.
