Honda side cases & top box?

Can anyone tell me if t is possible to fit a topbox with Honda luggage. I just bought the motech mount but realise it won't fit with the side case top rail in place.

A number of views so there must be a market for this.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

I'm in the process of trying to fabricate a plate similar to the motech one to fit to bike. I have a friend who is really keen to see if it can be done. In fact he is doing the bulk of the work. We have the plate made & brackets welded to clamp to the top rail. Now we are devising a method to align the support stays so the plate doesn't tilt back. I'll post photos once we have finished.
I prefer the Honda luggage. I had Givi side cases with the wingrack but thought it spoilt the look of the bike, especially with the cases off.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

If you are going for a SW motech alike, it would be nice not to have the grab rail removed and the top-case pushed a bit back because with SW the passenger gets less space then with other options.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

With the honda luggage, the grab rail has to be removed. The only way of fixing the plate is to the rail, which replaces the grab rail, that runs over the bike. The top box when fitted comes to the edge of the seat. The advantage of the motech one, which is why I'm trying to emulate it, is the fact that the box fitting plate can be removed easily when the top box is not required leaving just a small plate on the back of the bike.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

Good stuff buddy!
Looks very well made!
I think you will have zero issues with it, and albeit a bit bulkier, it will easily superpass the SW p.o.s. 5 fold!!!!
Nice one, lovely executed.
Congrats.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

The Honda line bags look good. However, what I like about my Givi bags, '02 model, is the lighting sytem from Twisted Throttle that I can add. It creates running lights, turn signals in the Givi system. It's a trick safety feature. I do see that you have the brake lite on your top bag. You can turn it into a running light and turn signal as well. check out, www.twistedthrottle.com I think.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

I've been looking into this. I think my next purchase has to be something to get rid of the bat ears that hang of the end of the bike. I have been looking at

Clear Lens LED Rear Lights with Integral Indicators for Honda CBR1100XX

along with maybe some smal flat LED indicators on the side

I have the Clear Alternatives unit and, while I like it a lot, I have had folks tell me that they had difficulty seeing my indicators. I have some LED stalk mounts that I will be installing to supplement. I am also exploring some adhesive LED strips to add to my hard bags, but I would like some that will combine brake and indicator function.

Forgot to mention the pannier kit came from DavidSilver Spares but could only get blue or silver. Silver were more expensive so bought the blue ones & had them resprayed to match bike.

Now just waiting for my thermometer and gear indicator to arrive.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

An informer XL. Quite expensive though and I'm having to get it from Alaska as the manufacturer won't ship to the UK!

It's coming from Glacier Chain Supplies

but he XL version which is not on their website yet. I need the XL version as it has a switch to display degrees C

How will you connect the electrics so that you don't forget to disconnect when removing the cases?

I will likely just use a 2-pole trailer-style connector mounted up at the top stay somewhere near the handle. The not forgetting part will come after the first couple of times I try to walk away with the plug still attached.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

I've now got most of my bling on my bird, so I thought I'd post some more pictures. Fitted the clear LED tail light but was told the flashers were often difficult to see in the daylight so I supplemented them with Mini LED ones.
From left to right on the bars are Volume control for music & intercom, Heated grip controller, TomTom Mount, Outside air temp, Gear indicator, EXO2 heated clothing controller. On the fairing I have 2 ultra bright mini LED bullets, & on the right side of the infill on the fairing I have the rider intercom socket & auxiliary power supply & on left side passenger intercom socket.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

Since you posted up for all to see, glad it's your Bird and not mine. Why do you want that big fcuking temp gage in your face? I appreciate what you are trying to do, but it's fugly as hell now. IMO! Wires and plugs all over the damn place. Sorry, but it's open for opinion.

Re: Honda side cases & top box?

Temp Gauge is a bit big, but not as obtrusive as it looks in the photograph. It was the only one I could source that was waterproof & gave temp in Centigrade. The only extra wires visible is the curly intercom wire and I suppose the GPS cradle wire. All the other wires follow the wiring looms or pipes on the bike so are not out of place. I ride all year round in all temps so need the heated stuff & I like to know, for safety, when the temp drops low enough for ice.
The micro LEDs on the front are tiny and very unobtrusive but when lit they give a much wider frontal area visible in the dark even with HID lights.
But as you say, it's my bike.
